In the previous video, we met Puss in Boots as a brash adventurer, proudly purring about his extraordinary ability to save the world and basking in the adoration it brought him. Now we meet him 11 years later, when arrogantly waking up from his eighth death, he realizes that he only has one last life left. The cat in one moment changes beyond recognition. He wonders if he has lost his charm forever…and with it the very essence of what makes him Puss in Boots.
That felt like a great starting point for the character,” says DreamWorks Animation president Margie Cohn. – Who is Cat if he can’t be that epic adventurer who laughs in the face of danger? Now that he has felt fear for the first time, will he be able to overcome it to regain his spell?
Puss in Boots faces a real existential crisis, and the only effective way out of it turns out to be finding a new purpose – a shadow of hope. This hope is given to him by the promise of a Wishing Star that can restore all his lost lives. But in order to ask her for a wish, the Cat will have to pull himself together and compete with other adventurers who set off to the Dark Forest in search of the mythical Star.
It was important to the filmmakers that the return of the much-loved Puss in Boots be both funny and gripping, so that it could usher in a new era for the character, while also bringing to the screen everything that audiences already loved about him. What they managed to achieve was to introduce a very fresh, more mature tone, while at the same time combining it with the comedic flavor of the Shrek series, while avoiding the impression of imitation. Familiar characters appear on the screen, merge and intertwine to reach a fantastic conclusion.

The film’s director Joel Crawford and producer Mark Swift admit that the story was inspired by Sergio Leone’s classic The Good, the Bad and the Ugly .
Here we have some expressive heroes who are chasing this one pot of gold. We wanted to keep that Western core, with four different types of people pursuing a single goal that they thought would change their lives forever. It gave the film a whole new, deeper potential,” explains Swift.
In this way, Puss in Boots also gains a completely new quality as a story not only a comedy.
There are also some darker tones here, reminiscent of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm. But telling the whole story as a comedy allows you to explore what fans have always loved about Puss in Boots, and introduce new viewers to his troubled world,” explains Crawford. – On the surface, this story is about a Cat who is afraid that his best years are behind him, but on a deeper level it is about celebrating life and all the wonderful experiences that we have a chance to live – he concludes.
