My poor ears! – review of the comic book “Asteriks. Golden Menhir “

Asteriks, Obeliks and Kakafoniks are able, as always, to make you laugh, although you have to bear in mind that we are not dealing with a typical comic book.

Comic book without comic frames

Asterix. The golden menhir was released in 1967 as a book CD. For a long time it was inaccessible to readers, but now it has returned from non-existence. Most importantly, given its form, we will not experience typical comic frames. We only have a record of dialogues and a dozen large illustrations depicting the struggles of brave Gauls. It was for this reason that my first doubts arose, will the funny, brilliant dialogues without visual support be just as comical? Is the Golden Menhir able to amuse readers like other comics in this universe?

Kakofoniks in action

The plot of the comic book focuses on the inept, talented artist, i.e. Kakofonik. As you know, everyone’s ears are broken from his singing, and he was often hit by his companions for even trying to open his mouth. He intends to take part in a bards competition to prove to everyone that he is a gifted singer. Unfortunately, his art may not be recognized by the “ignorant”, so Asterix and Obelix decide to accompany the protagonist to protect him from the possible anger of the crowd. The Romans also appear as standard, so you can – as always – expect a solid kill.

Classic story

I will say right away that the dialogues and the few illustrations alone make the comic worse than other Asterix items. Although the lines spoken by the characters are funny and the graphics are comical, there is just some magic missing here. Both the heroes and the plot are intriguing. However, while reading it, I noticed how important the drawings are. An inventive and funny story is not enough, because without epic scenes of violence and emotions on the characters’ faces, the Golden Menhir is not able to amuse as much as the Adventures of Gala Asterix . Still, it’s still a decent Gaul story. I had a lot of fun with her, it was nice to try something a little different. I am not particularly disappointed, but I am also not delighted. For Asterix fans it is a must-have anyway.

Who would like to get a Golden Menhir?

What can I say about this volume? I love Asterix and Obelix and meeting them again was fun and fun. I missed a few elements, but it was still comical, and these few illustrations by Alberto Uderzo look brilliant. At the end of the notebook, two pages are devoted to the history of this comic – they make us aware that we are dealing with an exceptional item. All in all, I can say it’s decent but no fireworks.
