Mutants on the Star Trail – a review of the comic book “Dawn X: New Mutants”

While a group of X-Men save the world, the Young Mutants head into space to visit their long-lost friend. However, they quickly run into trouble. How will they get out of them?

Imperial adventure

Members of the New Mutants group, along with other representatives of the homo superiors , now live on the island of Krakoa. The local idyll, however, does not serve them well. Wanting to break out of the monotony, they decide to visit their friend Cannonball, who is currently somewhere in space with his wife. To this end, they board the ship of star pirates Starjammers, which only promises trouble. Soon after, they fall under the authority of the Shi’ar Empire. They are sentenced to life imprisonment, although they can get out of trouble by fulfilling a certain mission. The heroes, of course, do not hesitate and accept the offer, thus getting into a galactic-political conflict.

Addition?

Discussing the album Dawn X: New Mutants should start with the fact that it is a spin-off of the main story started in the issue House of X: Powers of X and continued in Dawn X . So the New Mutants get a very loose one-shot, which is a separate story. Jonathan Hickman, a screenwriter known primarily from the Avengers and Secret Wars series, is responsible for its script . This time he decided to direct the fate of the Children of Atom and he started everything very well, giving us the already mentioned House X. At that time, we received a well-received, but also a very serious story. This time the creator decided to let us breathe a bit. The presented story is more humorous, it is not related to saving the world and does not affect the fate of the universe. Just a group of friends go on a trip and get into trouble, from which they try to get out. We get a lot of jokes here, breaking the fourth wall, weird plot twists and dealing with problems quite easily. Some fights are not even shown. We only get a picture after the battle has already been fought. In addition, inside we will find specific descriptions of the characters, and even a kind of game, so that we can see for ourselves which side of the conflict will win. At the same time, it must be admitted that the characters are well described here, they do not lack character and you can feel a bond between them. Of course, it is so much easier

And although the script is light, it should also be added that probably not everyone will find themselves in it. First of all, you need to know a bit about the New Mutants themselves. In addition, knowledge of Starjammers will also come in handy. The hardest part, however, will be finding yourself in the political systems of the Shi’ar Empire. Without this knowledge, a bit of chaos may creep in, which will disturb the reception of the comic.

Colorful cosmos

Dawn X: New Mutants was designed by Rod Reis. Admittedly, he brilliantly portrayed what Hickman had outlined in the script. And it’s not just about the fact that the drawings keep up with the story, there is no lack of dynamism here, and the characters are well presented. The artist also approached the subject in a more loose and humorous way. He did not stick rigidly to any framework and gave free rein to his imagination, giving us an extremely colorful universe. It is more symbolic, full of bizarre races and creatures, reminiscent of stories straight from the Guardians of the Galaxy. And those pastel, slightly blurry frames – it really makes a great impression and makes reading more pleasant. And on top of all this, we also get a set of covers, both from Reis and several other cartoonists, additionally eye-catching. Especially the Magik version you could fall in love with.

We fly?

Dawn X: New Mutants is a light adventure in a humorous tone. It’s definitely different from the whole mutant event started by Hickman. You can get into it and have fun without even focusing too hard. However, for people less familiar with the cosmic realities of Marvel, the reception may be difficult, and the story seems to be broken and less interesting. The whole comic also doesn’t add much to the general canon of the House of Ideas, so you can add it to your collection, but you don’t have to. Although it’s still worth it for the graphics.
