Mutants are back again – review of the comic book “Uncanny X-Men: Cyclops and Wolverine”, vol. 2

X-Man’s actions made almost all mutants disappear from Earth. Will Scott Summers somehow rebuild the team and lead them into battle in the war of the worlds?

Enemies or friends?

Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops, is one of the pillars of the X-Men team. He has been a member since the first comic book issue, that is from 1963. During this time, he was its leader many times. Of course, he also happened to leave her ranks, but it was usually not his fault, and he always returned to her. Wolverine, in turn, had been met by readers a year earlier, but he did not immediately belong to the team founded by Professor Xavier. Logan had always preferred to be a loner, and if he had stayed somewhere, it wouldn’t be for long. After all, he is most often associated with the X-Men group. Both gentlemen I have summoned have a troubled past behind them. No matter which world we consider, they are not very sympathetic. Contradictory characters, different opinions, and most of all the dispute over Jean Gray divided them strongly. However, they were able to tolerate each other and, in case of danger, cooperate well with each other. It’s hard to call them friends, it is more appropriate to set their status as “it’s complicated”. This time, however, they must put aside any arguments in order to reunite the team, as well as save the Earth from the invasion of Malekith’s forces.

Another collection

Uncanny X-Men: Cyclops and Wolverine begin where the Fall of the X-Men ended , that is, on the Earth from which all mutants have disappeared. Somehow, however, X-Man didn’t do everything right. Scott Summers is still alive, and Wolverine somehow returns from beyond the grave. As it turns out, there are not the only homo superior ones that still exist. So begins collecting the survivors and an attempt to create a new team out of them. Especially since groups such as the Marauders are also returning, and our world is under attack by the forces of Malekith. Of course, the return of the heroes does not like some rulers who are again looking for a cure for all mutations. Fortunately, Cyclops can count on Captain America’s support. But will Steve be able to protect the team?

Scott? Logan? Where are you?

The title of the comic in question indicates that the main characters should, of course, be Cyclops and Wolverine. The descriptions, in turn, suggest that the main theme is the War of the Worlds . Both pieces of information are as misleading as possible. These are not the only problems with the second volume of Uncanny X-Men . I haven’t seen so many story holes in a long time. As I mentioned, the Fall of the X-Menit ends with the erasure of all mutants from the face of the Earth. And here on the front page Scott Summers is alive and well. Of course, returns in Marvel are normal and even the greatest cataclysms are not able to completely eliminate some of the heroes, but usually it has its justification. In this case, there was an oversight on the part of the Polish publisher, who did not give us a notebook in which the character returns from beyond the grave! Similarly, we do not know anything about how, among others, Havok, Banshee, Magik, Mirage, Mystique or Wolfsbane.

In addition, it should be added that Cyclops and Logan have a large role to play here, but they are also not the main characters, as the title suggests. Another thing is the Malekith raid, to which only 29 pages out of 396 were devoted! It also doesn’t fit in with the rest of the adventure and completely knocks the story off the beaten track. And on top of all this, we get a lot of well-known fragments – team gathering, aggression from people, making mutants criminals, looking for vaccines, government attacks. Actually, it is difficult to look for a moment here that could surprise us. However, the author, Matthew Rosenberg, should be absolved a bit. In the Marvel 2.0 series, the X-Men got a mess that needs to be cleaned up now. So she tries her best to put all the elements back in their place and give the mutants a new life.

Adventure at a glance

Several cartoonists worked on Uncanny X-Men: Cyclops and Wolverine , but Salvador Larroca, Carlos Villa and Carlos Gomez made the biggest contributions. Both the three and the other artists did their job very well. It is difficult to find any mistakes here. The line itself and the colors are pleasing to the eye. Properly presented actions bring us much closer to the events taking place in the next frames. A big plus is also showing the heroes in their classic costumes. A slightly nostalgic treatment will surely please the fans.

A lot to be desired

The second volume of the Uncanny X-Men series released in the Marvel Fresh seriesis very disappointing. Although the action is carried out at a fair pace and a lot is happening, it clearly lacks a breath of freshness and new solutions. Mutant lovers will be able to predict many things in advance. It will also be difficult to encourage new readers to read, who will probably find it hard to find their place in history. On the other hand, people who would like to supplement their comic book collection referring to the event, which is the war of the worlds, will get just a few pages and do not contribute much to the mentioned adventure. Egmont also failed somewhat. Although the edition contains, as always, several alternative covers, and has been supplemented with a letter from Matthew Rosenberg, the notebook about Scott Summers’ return to the world of the living was not included, which created a large plot hole. So the only thing we can’t complain about is the graphics,

May the next comics about X-Men turn out to be better.
