On the initiative of the Egmont publishing house, the Rick & Morty comic book series has been appearing on our market for a long time . This time we received a volume in which we will read the story of two side characters.
Mr. Kupkazpupki and Summer
The title character is a small, yellow alien from an alien planet who first appeared in an episode of the Rick & Morty series titled Total Rickall . He immediately gained a lot of fans and became a positive symbol of cynicism and dark themes of the series. More specifically, Kupkazpupki is a close friend of Rick. Summer is Morty’s sister and Rick’s granddaughter. While watching the following episodes, you could observe her transformation from a blasé teenager into an ambiguous, interesting character. Unfortunately, in this comic we get to know the early version better.
From the beginning, you should be prepared that this time the mad scientist and his grandson are relegated to the background. During a conversation at the table, Summer listens to the conversation between her grandfather and her brother about the adventures they have experienced together. When her irritation reaches its climax, the girl decides to evacuate to her room. There, Mr. Kupkazpupki unexpectedly shows up and asks Summer for help in solving a problem. Why her and not Rick? After the events of the previously mentioned episode of the series, Mr. Kupkazpupki has not yet regained full confidence in his friend. So only Summer can help him.
This time it failed
In terms of graphic style, it is also not colorful. In other comics in this universe, the distinctive cartoon style has been successfully retained. Despite the fact that the protagonists are recognizable and the same color of the characters has been kept, there have also been many unnecessary modifications. The proportions are different: too big eyes and a very exaggerated way of showing emotions. I found no mistakes in the text, but some issues were polished for a long time (Mr. Kupkazpupki himself is a prime example). In addition to the main story, we also get an alternative version of its ending. Events take place in a different dimension. There is more Rick in it, which is a little relief after this not very interesting adventure.
Summary
The comic book Kupkazpupka Superstar lacks an interesting story and controversial humor, which is the hallmark of the series. The chance for a breath of fresh air in the comic book universe of Rick & Morty was unfortunately not used. The lack of all this means that I cannot recommend this comic with a clear conscience. Maybe it will work next time.
