18-year-old Todd Hewitt is the youngest in a group of terrestrial colonizers on a distant planet that was destined to become the New World for mankind. There are no women among the inhabitants who died as a result of a mysterious epidemic years ago. Men were also affected by the disease: everyone hears Noise, the thoughts of other residents, all the time. The settlement is ruled by a hard hand, charismatic Prentiss. The conditions on the planet are harsh, and life without women and with constant Hype drives some people crazy. While wandering through the endless forest, Todd discovers a crashed spacecraft, and soon meets Viola, who survived the crash. Where did she come from and why did she not die like the other women?
