The Minecraft movie has a new release date. Fans of the square world can expect an adaptation of the game in two years. The production will be supervised by director Jason Hess.
Minecraft is currently the best-selling game of all time, surpassing Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V. It’s an empire right now with numerous spin-offs bringing the franchise into new genres, but despite its massive success, Hollywood has yet to see any adaptation on screen. That’s not to say no effort has been made to do so, as Warner Bros. has been working on a Minecraft movie for about ten years. However, the script stuck in the so-called “development hell”, with numerous writers and directors coming and going from the project.
When will the Minecraft movie come out ?
It looks like there’s a real chance that a Minecraft movie is actually close to being made. Warner Bros. announced that it will be released on April 4, 2025, after having previously been removed from the premier slate. Jason Momoa is still attached to the film, but no other cast members have been confirmed. Jason Hess, director of Napoleon Explosive and Nacho Libre , will direct the film for the studio. We don’t know any other plot details at this time, but it’s expected to be an adaptation of the game. Hess has proven to have quite a distinct visual style and has a great sense of humor too, so it looks like we’re in pretty safe hands.
With the film due out in two years, production is likely to pick up speed. Depending on how heavy it is with the visuals, it seems likely that the film will begin shooting late this year or early next year. Either way, provided there are no major changes, it’s possible we’ll hear casting announcements for a Minecraft movie in the coming months .
