Breathtaking acrobatics
I got used to the fact that in Poland, for as long as I can remember, Donald Duck has always been popular in drawing stories. And in fact, it has been so so far, as the Mickey Mouse comics were often bland or had a shallow plot. When a gem was found, it was printed in Giant, on terribly rough paper. It shouldn’t look like this, is it?
Well, no, that’s why Egmont decided to publish something really interesting in our country, in a hard cover, with slippery paper. I get a very unusual story in which one of the rodent’s best antagonists appears – the cunning Phantom. And most importantly, the author does not take us to the boring Myszogrod, but to a completely distant land of legends and fairy tales. In a world where everyone lives on precarious, airborne plots that can be swept away by violent storms at any moment, simple craftsman Mickey is tasked with keeping these fragile floating islands in place. In constant demand as an expert in his trade, he has no time to think about the recent loss of his friend Goofy. There comes a time, however, that he has to face a tyrannical ruler who steals lands from the poorest.
Museum atmosphere
From the first pages we can immediately see that we are not in the magazine “Donald Duck” or “Giant”, reading the adventures of detective Miki, who fights with Black Peter or other thugs. In the case of this story, we have the impression of communing with the paintings that we see in the museum. I was totally amazed. It’s a real graphic cheek and it clearly feels like you’re in a luxurious comic book. Miki and the land of the Ancients take us on a colorful adventure with references to works such as The Lord of the Rings and even the AvatarJames Cameron with those air islands. The story itself is very deep, because on the first page we learn about the nightmare of Miki, who is terrified by the disappearance of his friend Goofy. In this story, the author delves into the meanders of Miki’s psyche. Really effort has been made to the characters, and it’s nice not to see them as smooth as you do in the regular Myshogorod tales. The story is exciting and catchy with lots of twists. I even say, for now, that it is a pity that it is so short, because it would deserve more pages, a second volume, or even a trilogy …
A few words about the release
After receiving this comic book, my aesthetic impressions were really transferred to another level of communing with art. Indeed, this book edition of this story is what this title deserves. We have a really beautiful canvas cover and golden letters in the title. Inside, we find a few sketches by Silvio Camboni. It is true that there could be more of it, but for the first attempt to release something like this, you cannot complain.
Many thoughts and many nice moments
I would definitely like to share a larger dose of my thoughts, however, I would have missed a day to write them, and I can assure you that there was plenty of it reading this remarkable and reviewed volume. I am glad that Egmont focused on publishing extraordinary comics with Mickey Mouse and her friends. Nevertheless, ten more pages to end the story would not be too much to allow even more emphasis and offer the reader a satisfying, masterful grand finale.
