Marvel’s version of political provocations – a review of the comic book “Amazing Spider-Man. 2099”, Vol. 7

Harsh Politics in the Marvel Universe? Sure why not! This time, Nick Spencer serves us a commotion on the international arena, in the middle of which, of course, Peter Parker himself lands. If that wasn’t enough, Pajączek will also be visited by his counterpart from 2099. It’s going to happen.

Let’s start with the title

So yeah… What’s not here? Extra Spidey, Doctor Doom, visions of the future. There’s a lot going on, and Spencer is reaching the heights of creativity. But maybe there’s too much going on here? If that wasn’t enough, there is also the character of Teresa Parker, Peter’s missing sister, who, however, serves here as a kind of plot binder. Without it, there would be complete chaos. I somewhat regret that despite the title of this volume 2099 , Miguel O’Hara (Spider-Man from the future) does not play any significant role here. Pity.

A bit of everything

The strength of Nick Spencer’s scripts has always been the skilful blending of Peter Parker’s private life with his superheroes. Here again we get moments when Pajączek focuses on his studies and his relationships with his loved ones, but soon he has to drop everything to save New York from the destructive plans of Doctor Doom. Many people love these stories because of Parker’s everyday problems, which is why a huge plus for the screenwriter for being able to put prosaic elements of the life of a young boy condemned to great responsibility even in such dramatic volumes.

International relations in the comic version

As I mentioned at the beginning, international relations are the most important in this volume of Pajączek’s adventures. Latveria and Symkaria have been feuding for years, but now their relationship is buzzing. A whole host of famous characters enter the scene, such as Chameleon, Hitman and even Silver Sable! This time, however, which does not happen often, such an abundance of heroes works in favor of the presented story. Despite the inept Spider-Man from the future, the rest of the plot is really well done. We get to know the intrigue gradually, and the solution will certainly surprise many readers.

Golden Sequence

In fact, the whole volume could be read for one incredibly successful sequence. At some point, Spider-Man begins to consider different ways to fight Doctor Doom raging around New York. He checks them using a certain device, finding out what are the real chances of success of various activities. Thanks to this, we can observe the death of Pajączek in many different ways. Great performance by the screenwriter and masterful execution of the cartoonists. It should also be mentioned here that the works of Patrick Gleason and Jan Bazaldua are stylistically very similar. Another plus, because changing the appearance of the drawings during the story usually does not work out in favor of the whole.

Threads worth continuing

It’s not bad, but it’s not exactly good either. Perfect for fans – a lot of smash, two Spider-Man, some adventures of Peter “in plain clothes”. A pleasant adventure to read, but nothing revolutionary. The strongest point is one sequence about predicting the future. We’ll see what happens next, because the interesting plot of Dr. Doom begins to unfold.

Nasza ocena: 7/10
