The production tells the story of a new group of superheroes in the Marvel universe who have lived on Earth for thousands of years, protecting people from murderous Deviants. However, they cannot get involved in human development and conflicts, and over the years they become silent observers of our world. The return of their eternal enemies and the “family” tragedy make them unite again and fight against known opponents and with a completely unexpected, even greater threat.
Failed blind date
Chloé Zhao’s film reminds me of an anecdote from one of my colleagues who thought he found the woman of his dreams on Tinder. Theoretically, everything was correct: interests, plans, sense of humor, and the first conversation, like a great trailer, announced their wonderful joint adventure. On the date, however, it turned out that nothing came out of the online promise of happiness, because the girl had a lot of color in her profile. The effect was that they only met once and they both decided that it would be fine. The same is the case with Eternals, announced as a groundbreaking work, phenomenal, introducing the artistry of Zhao to the MCU, and above all, showing us the successors of the Avengers. However, we received a film that is highly secondary, illogical and devoid of an interesting antagonist, and filled with excessive pathos, which Zack Snyder would not be ashamed of.
” I have no friends, I have my family ” – not in this case
After all, on the screen we see a moral conflict between the two heroes, reminiscent of scenes from Batman v Superman, but in this case devoid of a comic book atmosphere. The theme of humanized gods is also not impressive. The protagonists are almost cardboard, filled with apparent motivations, and most of all they deliver tiring tirades full of clichéd and pathetic phrases. The Eternals differ greatly in their divinity from the classic pattern of Marvel’s next-door hero (possibly a rich playboy), and even from full-blooded and memorable cosmic protagonists like Thor or Guardians of the Galaxy, which makes it difficult for us to feel like them. The relations between the heroes have been written even less, which are as close as in the case of ours with distant friends on Facebook.Doom Patrol) . On the screen, however, the heroes’ past has been reduced to the level of a few jokes and insignificant disagreements. Actors are trying to bring their characters to life, but Gemma Chan, good Barry Keoghan and Kumail Nanjiani who steals every scene are unable to bear the film on their shoulders and save us from disappointment. It is no coincidence that none of the movie heroes will be in our top 5, or even the top 10 favorite MCU heroes.
The creativity, artistry and almost visual orgasm announced by the Marvel producers boil down to a few nice shots, which should be considered a huge disappointment, because after the Oscar winner I expected a breath of fresh air in the already well-worn MCU style.
Issue written off?
However, not much interesting can be said about the Eternals DVD , which was written off by the distributor probably due to relatively poor results in theaters. The packaging and the CD are decorated with graphics known to us from posters, and on the back we can also find some photos known to us.
We won’t find any additional materials on the album that would diversify the screening of the film, and I’d love to see the removed scenes as well. Perhaps they would allow the characters to be deepened and better understood, as was the case in many analogous cases.
After launching, we get a simple intuitive menu that allows you to move between scenes and choose one of the possible soundtracks (including Polish subtitles and dubbing).
Better version of Inhumans
I treat Eternals as an unfulfilled promise from Marvel . I expected a premium work from the announcements (by the talented creators anyway), and I got, at best, a solid product from a chain store. The biggest problem with Chloé Zhao’s film, however, is that it was made too late, as we would have considered it a groundbreaking comic book adaptation a few years ago, but currently it is not on the same level as the best MCU films. It’s a pity that the DVD was even worse than the painting itself.
