The script was created by the screenwriter of  Boruto: Naruto the Movie , Ukyō Kodachi. While both Kodachi and Ikemoto were responsible for the manga, Kodachi also oversaw the anime adaptation along with Kishimoto. In January 2017, Shueisha reported that one million copies of the Boruto manga had been  sold .

When Sasuke returns to the village to warn Naruto of the impending threat of establishing Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s motivation, Boruto convinces Uchiha to train him for the upcoming Chūunin Exam so he can impress his father. During the exam, Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, the threat Sasuke talked about, appear and kidnap Naruto to use Kurama, a tailed beast sealed within his body, to revive the dying Divine Tree from the dimension they come from. Boruto joins Sasuke and the four Kage to save Naruto. The battle ends when Momoshiki, sacrificing Kinshiki to increase his power, is defeated by Boruto with the help of Naruto and Sasuke. However, Momoshiki survived long enough to realize Boruto’s full potential while also warning him of future events. After recovering from the fight, Boruto decides to become someone like Sasuke in the future, while Sarada wants to fulfill his dream of becoming Hokage. During the next mission, Boruto serves as the bodyguard of the Land of Fire Daimyō’s son, Tentō. Both find a common language over time, as they both want to find recognition from their fathers. When a group of bandits known as Mujina kidnaps Tentō, Boruto saves the boy from the group’s leader, who is trapped for knowing about the sign. which Momoshiki placed on Boruto’s hand. Naruto and the others learn that there is a group called “Kara” (jap.  Scale ) looking for people with signs called Karma (Japanese  Kāma, ang. Linchpin). Boruto’s team meets the escaped Kara Kawaki, a boy who also has Karma in his hand. Kawaki becomes an adopted member of the Uzumaki family in order to protect him. However, while trying to protect the boy, Naruto and Sasuke are defeated by Kara’s leader, Jigen. Jigen then seals Naruto while Sasuke escapes. Team 7 rescues the Hokage when Boruto’s Karma causes him to become possessed by Momoshiki. Upon learning of this, Sasuke discovers that all Karma users will be taken over by the Ōtsutsuki clan, including Jigen. Meanwhile, a mutiny begins to form in Kara, and Koji Kashin challenges Jigen. In turn, Amado goes to Konoha to seek asylum in exchange for information, revealing that the real leader of Kara is actually Isshiki Ōtsutsuki, who has possessed Jigen since he was betrayed by Kaguya when they came to Earth thousands of years ago, and Karma allows the Ōtsutsuki clan to be resurrected through the host’s body. Although Koji kills Jigen, forcing Isshiki to imperfect reincarnation, and Kawaki’s Karma is removed, Isshiki forces Koji to retreat and leaves Konoha himself.
