Hamish Steele is a British animator and cartoonist whose comic book Dead Point has been animated by Netflix . This title is an adventure game full of paranormal elements and fits well with the trend of contemporary slightly abstract productions from a new generation of artists. If you are fans of Steven Universe , Gravity Falls or Adventure Time , the fates of Norma, Barney and Pugsley also have a chance to appeal to you.
And I could go to work at McDonald’s
Meet the amazing amusement park built in honor of the famous actress Pauline Phoenix, referring to the titles in which she played. Norma works there – a girl with social problems, and recently also her closest friend Barney and his pug dog, Pugsley. At a standstillnothing can be certain and each day is another amazing adventure. This is due to the passage in the park leading to other dimensions, inhabited by demons, angels and all kinds of strange creatures. The cynical and at times not very clever demon Courtney is on guard so that these unusual characters do not appear in the world of people. And everything would be fine if the aforementioned best man fulfilled his tasks and not … notoriously changed the side on which he is located. Courtney decides to invite to the world of people the terrible and cruel king of demons Temelukus – who wants the throne and rule over the world. However, the magical monarch does not expect a clever pack of kids to stand in his way.
Hocus pocus, witchcraft mary, now your pug is… an old demon
It is impossible not to notice that Steele’s drawing style is similar to that known from Steven Universe . The characters have rather rounded and full shapes, large noses and eyes, and additionally specific facial expressions. Many abstract and totally crazy ideas for characters in these drawings (e.g. a finger-shaped demon, or an echo metamorphosing with its own presence, melting its facial features). These are definitely not cute and adorable graphics for everyone, but rather another publication aimed at audiences familiar with the contemporary trend of cartoonists and their innovative ideas.
Good representation is not bad
I know the representations mainly from manga, so it was interesting to meet a transgender character in a non-Japanese comic. Barney is shown as a person struggling with family problems, but the author does not make this topic the main plot of the comic. Lack of tolerance on the part of parents, fear and fear of another rejection or a suicide attempt are shown in the background, leaving us with a lot of guesswork (we never get a specific description of what the protagonist wanted to do to himself, only the text that his brother was about to be executed) siblings). The way the author weaves the LGBTQ + theme allows us to better understand Barney’s motivations and builds an interesting character with a specific character, which in my opinion is a good solution and presents this issue in an appropriate way.
I can’t exorcise you, but I can turn you into lasagne
A blind spot is a collection of interesting minor events, fights with demons, emotional skirmishes and decisions (often moral ones). However, everything connects together and leads to an interesting, though sad ending. The author definitely thought carefully about the growing tension and the dosage of information, so the album reads with unwavering emotions and interest. The ending initially suggests what will happen in the sequel, so the only thing left to do is wait for the next volume. Coming back to the question at the beginning of the text – I made a mistake starting my adventure with the Blind Spot with animation, the comic book is better in my opinion.
