Long Sleep – review of the book “The Sleeping Awakened” by HG Wells

I am pleased to review a classic and semi-legendary item for you again. A book that, despite its age on the back of its neck, has in no way become outdated. A novel by the author of the War of the Worlds and the Time Machine . HG Wells’ Sleeping Awake is ahead of you .

Fall into a long, uninterrupted sleep …

Imagine that your world is collapsing, that you have lost everything you had, that nothing makes you happy anymore? What are you doing? It would be natural to find psychological help, but if it doesn’t help, then what? You might break down, and most would, but the part about the soul of a risky man and a madman would be looking for new impetus. And so you explore the world of stimulants, orgies and various, often sick, addictions, until you again do not enjoy anything, nothing drives you. And then what? You start to experiment, combine different things until you reach a state in which even sleep cannot bring you relief, and you cannot even fall asleep. You can’t and that’s it. In a state of chronic fatigue, you make the final decision. Time to kill yourself. Confidently, you go for a walk and after miles of walking you reach a high cliff. Over there, ready to jump, you are held back by a random passer-by. He talks to you, takes all your troubles and sorrows out of you, and ultimately takes you to himself. There he begins to speak, and something breaks in you and you fall asleep, although this is a bad word, you fall into a trance, a kind of lethargy on the verge of life and death. Your body is not decomposing, but also has virtually no vital signs. Even breathing is very weak. Years pass and you finally wake up. You are somewhere, you don’t know where and you don’t really understand how you got there. You learn that you have slept for more than two centuries, and the world you have known has gone down in history. A new one has come, much more strange and at the same time the same, and for some vague reason you have become the center of this world, the world that belongs, as they told you, to you. What are you doing? a bystander stops you. He talks to you, takes all your troubles and sorrows out of you, and ultimately takes you to himself. … wake up after 200 years …

What I wrote above is nothing more than a summary of the first chapters of HG Wells’ novel. Summary that seems very realistic, because even today we do not know exactly what is possible for the human body and what is not. My task is to introduce this summary to the subject of the work in question and make you reflect on it, because despite the age since it was published, the messages of this work are still up-to-date and still force you to think. So what exactly is this item about? Well, in short, this is a story of a man who woke up after 200 years and tries to cope with the new world. But as is the case with Wells, the plot itself is just a tool that is used to convey views and insights on the development of society. In the Sleeping Awake , as in the Time Machine, the author deals with heavy and difficult topics. In this case, the caliber of theses put forward by the writer is comparable to 1984Orwell. By sending his hero to the future, Wells gained an area where he could directly criticize the development of society, which was already visible in his time. The author’s anger runs through this novel that the world seeks to eliminate individuality or to reduce it to a luxury. Individual, you can be in power, but not one of many. You have to be part of the mass, look the same and think the same. It doesn’t matter if you listen to the rulers or the opposition or who else. You don’t mean anything by yourself, unless you have the power. The power in this novel is the possibility of deciding the life and death of millions, their total surveillance and marginalization, because only you count, because you act for the good of everyone, or you understand your friends and colleagues by all. The rest are tools

… And discover that the world is still angry.

Wells’ prose has something about it that does not allow anyone to pass by it indifferently. The observations outlined by the author are valid even today. We ourselves observe that the world is divided into individuals with power and a crowd that has no right to their own opinion. Wells shows where the further development of such a society can lead, and the place is filled with ineffable nightmares, a terror that will shatter everything we know when it hits.

This issue is, as usual, a display of the Vesper publishing house. They probably really want to get the classics for themselves. Each item is a masterpiece of the setting. It is similar in this case, and so is the translation. Where do they find these translators? Where did they get Płaza, Sokołowski and who only? Whence? I don’t know, but I know one thing, I want more.

Sleeping Awakened is an amazing piece of reading. It provokes reflection, and Wells’s specific language prevents his messages from becoming outdated. It is worth reading this item. Really worth.

Nasza ocena: 7.5/10

A novel for all times. It's worth it, not only for the binding. I recommend.
