After a 15-year absence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Liv Tyler will be returning to the series to reprise her role as Betty Ross. The actress will star in Captain America: New World Order.
Liv Tyler’s only appearance in the MCU to date was 2008’s The Incredible Hulk , which debuted just months after Iron Man’s official release. In this film, Edward Norton starred as Bruce Banner. Mark Ruffalo then took over the role and has since appeared in all subsequent installments.
The Incredible Hulk continues to be something of an anomaly for the MCU. As fans are well aware, it was a joint production from Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures. Especially after Ruffalo’s recast as Banner, the events of this film were largely ignored for years until 2016’s Captain America: Civil War , which saw William Hurt return as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, Betty’s father. In 2021, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings brought back Tim Roth, who gained a more prominent role in last year’s Patron of She-Hulk.
The new Captain America will bring back Thunderbolt Ross. After Hurt’s death, Harrison Ford takes over the role. Another Incredible Hulk character , Tim Blake Nelson’s Samuel Sterns is set to play the antagonist.
Can we expect a solo Hulk movie ?
Prior to Liv Tyler, Betty Ross was portrayed by Jennifer Connelly in the 2003 movie The Hulk . While the Hulk himself has made numerous appearances over the years since The Incredible Hulk was released , some behind-the-scenes challenges have prevented the character from organizing his own solo production. Just as other studios owned the rights to characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men, Universal owns the rights to any movie with the Hulk as the main character, which would require Marvel Studiosand Universal to negotiate a solo installment deal. Given the studio’s success in utilizing the characters in more team-based performances, we probably shouldn’t expect a solo Hulk movie anytime soon, though audiences will be excited to see New World Order bring back so many elements from The Incredible Hulk in its upcoming adventure.
Captain America: New World Order is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
