From the beginning to the end
Each reader has his or her favorites – books, genres or publications. We can also list authors, illustrators and translators. But what if the proposition we hold is a small work of art? Then we probably remember it for a (really) long time. Supersi is a very inconspicuous title, and how charming! The authors tell the stories of three children abandoned on Earth – Mata, Lili and Benji, heroes endowed with superpowers who – as you can easily guess – can help and harm, often at the same time. Going back to school brings new challenges, including hiding the truth from peers. The reviewed comic received the 2016 ACBD Youth Award, which confirms its value among the latest offers for teenagers.
The trauma is still alive
The comic book story, although undoubtedly captivating the reader with beautiful illustrations, was lined with family drama. The siblings lose their parents in dramatic circumstances, which changes their lives forever. On Earth, they must hide their otherness, origin, and the aforementioned superpowers. In addition, they carefully make sure that they do not draw attention to themselves. And they do it quite cleverly. Unfortunately, the loss of parents cannot be compensated by the presence of peers at school, or even establishing closer relationships with them. Supersom lack friendship, sympathy, love and care … This short outline of the characters’ emotions indicates the uniqueness of the comic’s plot. On the one hand, we can sympathize with the siblings of the traumatic experiences, on the other – it is worth supporting your favorite characters who would not really want to move anymore!
New on the market
The authors use both some well-known patterns and classics in the comic, incl. superhero cinema . These heroes have superpowers that enable them to achieve the intended goal. However, it should not be forgotten that, above all, they are only teenagers who continue to suffer from the loss of their loved ones. The graphic design of the album deserves special recognition – the pictures are sparse (not overloaded with details), but expressive characters. Although siblings share some distinctive features of appearance, they are not the most important. The character of the character is more significant to me. It makes it extremely easy to identify with both Mat, Lili and Benji. It all depends on the perspective, and it can undergo numerous transformations.
