Let’s build something together! – review of the cooperative game “Recto Verso”!

The authors of the discussed cooperative game Recto Verso are Inka and Marcus Brand, while Camille Chaussy is responsible for the illustrations. Players form teams (two people max) and build together. The more pieces they manage to construct, the more points they get.

The box itself is a construction site

The rules of the game can be explained in two minutes! The box serves as a construction site during the game and should be placed between the cooperating partners (for a given round), while the wooden elements should be placed nearby. If we do not build in a given round, we operate the stopwatch and … we draw a card, which we put into the slot in the box.

Remember that to surprise the players, cover both sides of the card with your hands and reveal it at the last minute, three-four! The partners look at their side of the card and communicate with each other as they move the wooden elements along the grid at the construction site. However, they cannot turn the box and see what is on the other side. When the first partner finishes, he shouts: “Recto!”, The second – “Verso!”. The timekeeper then stops the timer and the players check the results together. Partners receive as many points as it took to construct (see table on the side of the box).

Important information

When you open the box for the first time, you have to push all the tokens out of the frames. Importantly, you cannot throw away these four frames, because during the game you need to put them on the bottom of the box and put a plastic insert on them (just put the board on it). The slot in the board and the slot in the insert must match, because that’s where we put the building card.

Other important issues concern the construction phase – all wooden elements should be used to set up a building, so – importantly – some of them will be hidden inside the building. Our structure must fit on a 4 × 4 square construction site, but it does not have to fill it completely. The principle is also important that there must never be any empty space under the elements – so take care of it!

How to communicate effectively?

Before each game, you must choose the difficulty level – normal (cards with a blue background) or difficult (cards with a purple background), in addition – as already mentioned – the hidden tokens allow us to choose a partner. During the game, players communicate with each other and strive to build their structures (as described on the card). There is also a variant for two players. In this option, we go through seven stages and fight for the title of King of Constructing (we count the points and check the result in the table in the manual).

Recto Verso game . Build a party! is an undoubtedly party proposition, which not only captivates with its idea, but also draws you in for a long time. It is true that the recommended player age is 8 years, but with the help of parents and younger children should be able to handle it – just watch out for the small parts of the game!
