The second season of I am Groot will debut tomorrow! Kristen Lepore, the director of the series, spoke about James Gunn’s contribution to the production. You can watch the series on Disney+.
James Gunn has sung his Marvel swan song, for now. The new head of DC Studios premiered his final Marvel Studios directorial project in May of this year in the form of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This threequel marked the completion of Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and concluded his duties at Marvel Studios. He also worked as an executive producer on Avengers : Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame and I Am Groot . These duties were essentially performed to ensure that outside directors handled Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy characters with dialogue and actions that were consistent with how Gunn created them.
Now that his days in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are in the rearview, future projects that include Guardians of the Galaxy characters will be addressed without Gunn’s official input.
James Gunn’s “Trust and Faith” in I Am Groot 2
The first Guardians of the Galaxy character to get his own story is Groot. The baby iteration of the talking tree returns for five more episodes in Season 2 of I Am Groot .
I Am Groot director Kirsten Lepore noted that although Gunn did not return as an executive producer for Season 2, he had “a lot of trust and belief” in the team to do justice to Groot’s story.
I think he had a lot of trust and faith in us, especially after season 1. I took it as an approval saying: Okay, we have our style, we do our thing, James gives us a thumbs up. I think we’re good for season 2. His fingerprints and DNA are always there because he created the character.

Gunn previously worked as EP on the first season of I Am Groot . During this time, he and Lepore had many conversations about how to handle the titular character.
We had a conversation at the very beginning of season 1. We had to talk about who this character was to make sure we were on the same page. I wanted to do justice to this character. He gave me some tidbits of wisdom and described Groot as a bad kid. I always had this in the back of my mind when writing for Season 1 and 2. These magical words of inspiration always flow through the concepts of Season 2.

What will the series be about?
Baby Groot discovers the universe as he travels around the galaxy aboard the Guardians of the Galaxy ship. This time he comes face to face with new, colorful creatures and explores new lands. Above all, however, he is supposed to cause trouble again with his adventures.
