Known unknown enemy – comic book review “Batman. Detective Comics. Mythology”

Someone is chasing Batman’s family and mentors, forcing Bruce to embark on an emotional journey back to the beginning of his story. A great start to the new Batman series on the Polish market is now available thanks to the Egmont publishing house.

The whole thing begins with a murder whose victims – a man and a woman – are styled as Bruce Wayne’s parents. The next victim is the doctor Leslie Thompkins, a longtime friend and guardian of the bat-man. Shortly thereafter, the mysterious torturer also attacks Alfred Pennyworth. Everything indicates that someone really cares about hurting Batman through the people closest to him. Of course, the Dark Knight sets out to find the murderer, but he doesn’t expect him to be someone he has known forever.

Lost hopes

I will not hide that with the next volumes of Gack’s adventures coming out as part of the DC Rebirth series (where Tom King is responsible for the script) my love for this character began to fade. The poor pace of the development of events and the general atmosphere in that series definitely bore me and do not encourage me to continue reading (I endured 10 volumes anyway), so I decided that it is worth reaching for comics from another artist.

Regained Hopes

In Mythology, the script is written by Peter J. Tomasi, who has been associated with the DC brand for many years, working on such titles as Superman (also published by Egmont), Green Latern Corps , Nightwing and Brightest Day . The graphic side was prepared by Doug Mahnke, who has in his portfolio such comics as Superman: The Man of Steel , Justice League or Black Adam: The Dark Age. I don’t know who made these creators collaborate on this title, but the duo turned out to be incredibly well. Thanks to them, the reader received a story showing Batman who must go back in time, relive certain events and realize who played an important role in his “birth”. Despite the fact that at times he is even pressed to the limit of his emotional capabilities, he ultimately proves that he is still characterized by the strength and the ability to plan his every move. Ready for anything, fearless detective – that’s what Batman is in this comic, and I liked it! The plot can be described as intriguing and mysterious for most of the comic. It is impossible to predict what will happen, and the next pages are read with genuine interest and curiosity in which way it will all go.

Happy birthday …

The only element that not everyone may like is the ending. I did not expect it and at first I found it unsatisfactory (I also found comments from internet users that, according to them, it does not change anything into the status quo of the entire story). After a few days of reading it, I realized that it was in line with what I subconsciously think about Batman and what I expect from his character. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal anything more, because I would spoil your pleasure from learning about this story (the ending is the key twist!).

Mythology is, above all, a great study of Batman, who shows himself to us from his strongest side, despite the fact that the world around him seems to fall apart. Certainly, the comic is worth recommending to fans of Gack who plays the role of more detective than superhero. Personally, I’m looking forward to the sequel.

A good start to the new series. Batman back to basics , presented as primarily a detective - I'm definitely yes!
