In 2014, Kingsman: The Secret Service introduced Harry Hart (Colin Firth), a surprisingly well-ordered gentleman spy, and Gary Eggsy Unwin (Taron Egerton), a boy with a troubled past and a desperate search for a fatherly role model. Harry recruited Eggsy, trained him in gentlemanly manners and espionage, and with a squad of Kingsmans, the pair defeated the nefarious tech billionaire Richmond Valentine (Samuel L. Jackson). In the 2017 sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle , we met the American counterpart of the British organization in the form of the Statesman agency, and this time evil took the form of enterprising drug dealer Poppy Adams (Julianne Moore).

In the latest installment, entitled King’s Man: The First Story Mission, takes place over a hundred years earlier, in the shadow of World War I, which gives an opportunity to sketch the genesis of the Kingsman agency.
I wanted to do something different, explains Matthew Vaughn, the film’s screenwriter, director and producer. – I wanted to show a great, epic adventure. During my childhood, movies like Lawrence of Arabia were on the screens and were both epic and not boring. So I thought I would like to revive this species. And since it itchy, it had to be scratched.
This meant a fundamental change of tone, as explained by Karl Gajdusek, who co-wrote the script with Vaughn:
It soon became clear that we would be writing a script that would not fit into the atmosphere of the first two, but would have its own, new character. It is a peculiar mix of a naughty, punk, radical version of the story with the seriousness and emotion due to the immensity of World War I victims.
Gajdusek believes that this approach required exceptional attention to detail:
Our dates are correct, the events depicted are real, which gives the image credibility. We are only suggesting that our story took place behind the scenes, in discreet rooms.
Daniel Brühl, who recreates the historical character of Erik Jan Hanussen in the film, believes that the film contains an educational element:
Yes, it’s an entertaining action movie, with humor and all the other elements, but it’s also a very fun history lesson. While the story has been reinvented, the conflicts are real, as are some characters, and this actually arouses curiosity as the viewer learns something or remembers a certain chapter of the story.
Brühl adds:
The script blew me away. It was hard to break away. I remembered filming “Inglourious Basterds” with Quentin Tarantino. In a way, this production is similar in that it reinvents the story, combining fictional characters with many real and undisputedly fascinating, and in addition, it mixes them all in a perfectly meaningful way.
King’s Man: The first mission is also a galaxy of talented actors who bring depth, credibility, as well as humor and sensitivity to their roles. Harris Dickinson plays the young main character of the film – Conrad Oxford. His father, Orlando Oxford, Duke of Oxford and the founder of the Kingsman Agency, is the sensational Ralph Fiennes in this film. In addition to them, we can also see Gemma Arterton, Rhys Ifans in the great role of Rasputin, or the three great rulers (George V, William II and Nicholas II) Tom Hollander, who play at the same time.

The faithful recreation of the realities of World War I was not the easiest task, but the creators did their work with great class. The sets prepared by Darren Gilford and his team are surprisingly authentic, and the excellent cinematography by Ben Davis makes this film a great pleasure to watch.
Co-writer Karl Gajdusek believes the scale and scale of the film takes the franchise to the next level:
I think what will surprise people is the epic nature of this movie. We use telephoto lenses, extras and battle scenes in line with the tradition of great epic war movies. This movie has momentum and is very serious at times.
For Matthew Vaughn King’s Man Timeline: The first mission is just beginning.
This is the real foundation of what Kingsman is, says Vaughn. – I hope that everything goes well enough that we will be able to go through history in this series – decade after decade – to show how the secret agent profession has evolved.
King’s Man: The First Mission is an epic adventure that will make you laugh. You’ll also cry a little. You are going on a journey that you do not expect. If you’re a fan of the Kingsman series, this movie will prove why you are. And if not yet, we hope you will convert after the screening – sums up the director.
