Mortal Kombat is one of the largest and most iconic game series. It’s just a great and overly violent fighting game series filled with great characters. It also has some of the better film adaptations of video games. While they’re not perfect, the original 90s movie is widely fan-liked, and the recent 2021 reboot was also a commercial success, even if it wasn’t critically acclaimed.
Mortal Kombat 2 has been in development since 2021, and it looks like we’re closer than ever to finally seeing it. The first movie teased that Johnny Cage could appear in the sequel, and it looks like that will happen. As reported by The Wrap , The Boys , The Lord of the Rings , and Star Trek star Karl Urban is in final talks to play Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. This seems to be further confirmed by movie producer Todd Garner, who tweeted the news himself. It’s unclear how big a role he’ll have in the movie, but it looks like he’ll be part of the main cast rather than just a one-off as they’re looking for great talent for the role, and Cage is one of the most featured characters in the games. He has a romantic relationship with Sonya Blade, so we’ll get to see that begin to develop in the new movie.
For those unfamiliar with Johnny Cage, the character is a Hollywood action star who gets drawn into a deadly fighting tournament. He is often seen acting like an egotistical diva with flashy clothes, stylish hair, and constant references to the Hollywood machine. One can only imagine that this will continue in films where Urban maps this personality. It is worth adding that in the 1995 version, this character was played by Linden Ashby.
