One of the most famous films of the year – the 11th Oscar-nominated Joker is now available on optical media.
Produced for “just” $ 55 million, the Joker unexpectedly turned out to be one of the biggest movie hits of 2019. The Joker tells the story of the birth of the most famous comic book villain in the DC Comics universe. The portrait of Arthur Fleck in the film shows a man trying to find his place in the divided community of Gothamans. Dreaming of even a bit of recognition, he tries his hand at being a stand-up comedian. It turns out, however, that ultimately he is always the one who is ridiculed. A painfully honest, allegorical study of characters shows how a man trapped in the vicious cycle of existence, between apathy, cruelty and betrayal, makes one after another disastrous decisions that trigger a tragic chain of events.
The director of the film is Todd Phillips – the author of the popular comedy series The Hangover . The idea for a Joker was born in the mind of the creator as early as 2016. The director was largely inspired by two films by Martin Scorsese (he is one of the producers) from the 1970s, ie Taxi Driver and King of Comedy . The starting point for Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver was the now classic Batman: A Killing Joke by Alan Moore.
Phillips about his approach to making this film says:
– I love the complexity of the Joker character. I figured his birth was worth investigating in a movie because no one had done it before. Even in the canon, there is no formally recognized version of its beginning. That’s why, together with Scott Silver, we wrote a version of the story with a complex and complicated character, about how it changes and … falls into the abyss. That’s what interested me. Not the story of the Joker, but the story of becoming a Joker
The world premiere of the film took place during the International Film Festival in Venice, where the picture was presented in the main competition. The production was enthusiastically received by viewers and critics, and at the festival it won three awards, including the Golden Lion – Grand Prix of the event for the best film.
“Joker” entered the screens of world cinemas at the beginning of October 2019, and from the very first days it met with great interest of viewers. In the first weekend of screening in the US, the picture generated over $ 96 million in the box office listing, and only $ 55 million was consumed in production. In total, the picture grossed over $ 1 billion in cinemas around the world, making it the first ever R-rated production (for viewers aged 17 and over with an accompanying adult) to do so.
