During Lionsgate’s Q4 2023 earnings call, Motion Picture Group CEO Joe Drake confirmed that the fifth John Wick installment remains in early development.
We’re going through this franchise right now, not just in the AAA video game space, but we’re watching a regular series of spin-offs really develop this universe so that there’s a permanent cadence. The official thing is that as you know, Ballerina is the first spin-off coming next year. We are working on three others, including John Wick 5 and a TV series, The Continental, which will air soon. And that’s how we build the world – and when the five movies come around, it’s going to be organic – it’s going to grow out of how we start telling those stories.
Drake explained.
One of the next expansions to the John Wick series will be Ballerina, a spin-off about the titular retired ballerina (played by Ana de Armas) who is drawn into the murder of her family. The project will be directed by Len Wiseman and will also see the return of Keanu Reeves as John Wick and Ian McShane as Winston. Ballerina was written by Shay Hatten and produced by Basil Iwaniek, Erica Lee and Chad Stahelski. Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa are overseeing the project for Lionsgate.
Having him [ Ballerina director Len Wiseman] on board and approaching some of the action projects from a slightly different perspective, the character’s involvement and how and what he wants to do during the action sequences keeps it a bit fresh. So we’re not copying over and over with gun-fu or anything like that. And since the character is different, we will get a different approach to things. I plan to be there to help whenever I can. And our 87eleven stunt team will be very actively involved in helping Len with all his acting needs.
– said Stahelski in an interview with THR.
