For November 10, Egmont has scheduled the premiere of the sixth volume in the series, entitled The Fall. This time Blacksad will be embroiled in an intrigue reaching the highest levels of power in New York. Blacksad’s world is set in the realities of America in the first half of the 20th century. The only significant discrepancy is that it is inhabited by anthropomorphized animals. Thanks to this procedure, it is much easier for the authors to characterize characters who not only have human features, but also stereotypical animal attributes assigned to a given species. And so, throughout the series, there are, among others, such individuals as a loner cat, a wise owl, a beagle, a crazy Dalmatian, sneaky reptiles or sly foxes. The gallery of perfectly presented individuals is truly impressive and always perfectly suited to the storylines.
The comic book world of Blacksad currently consists of five albums: they are In the Shadows, which is a racial black crime set in a big city jungle, the Arctic , a story of cunning revenge and prejudice, full of passion and Cold War paranoia Red soul , filled with music and voodoo magic Hell, peace and poetic Amarillo . Each of them is a closed, independent whole. The situation is different with the sixth album, entitled The Fall , which is the first part of the diptych, scheduled for November 10th .
The intrigues of individual albums take place in various locations, from concrete streets of New York, through sandy Las Vegas and humid New Orleans, to sunny Texas. The authors, sending the black cat on a trip around the USA, involve him in neat criminal intrigues in the spirit of the classic noir novels such as Dashiell Hamnet and Raymond Chandler, but also successively analyze various elements of American history. In subsequent stories filled with crime, corruption, passions or addictions, echoes of hunting for Soviet spies of the macrocartic era, racial prejudices and anti-nuclear moods echo. There are also pauses in honor of great literature, art and music, which is present in each volume in the form of jazz and blues pieces played by supporting characters. Blacksadit is also, to a large extent, the exploration of the so-called american dream, expressed in subtle references to such artists as Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac or Edward Hopper. The Fall begins a new chapter in Blacksad’s history and is the quintessence of the best aspects of the series, where the core is a complex criminal plot reaching high levels of power, and social and artistic threads resound in the background. This time, the black cat and his friend, the journalist Weekly, stumble upon a scandal involving city officials, the mafia, trade unions and William Shakespeare. New York will be the arena of events again, and the city’s further aggressive development is at stake.
The author of all scenarios is Juan Diaz Canales, a Spaniard active in the film and animated series industry, also known for taking over the continuation of Corto Maltese’s adventures after Hugo Pratt. On the other hand, Juanjo Guarnido, a Spanish animator working on many films of the Walt Disney Studio, who recently painted the Indian tramp , appreciated also in Poland, is responsible for the beautiful, realistic illustrations .
The Blacksad series has gained recognition around the world with numerous awards, including three Angoulême Festival Awards, three Eisner Awards and four Harvey Awards. Its popularity meant that the anthropomorphic universe began to expand to other media. In 2015, a textbook for a role-playing game was created, and four years later, the computer game Blacksad: Under the Skin , which won the Gamescon award. However, in September this year, the production of a radio play based on the first volume was announced, and for several years the subject of an actor’s film adaptation has been returning.
