Awakening of the Sleepyheads
Dan Davis is an outstanding inventor. He created Służka – a robot that helps with household chores. Over time, he strove to invent better and better machines that would make people’s lives easier. One of them was to be Phenomenal Frank. But what happened that we get to know him when he drinks his sorrows in a pub? As it turned out, his fiancée along with Miles, Dan’s partner, deceived him and deprived him of decision-making power in the company. And so Davis decided to take advantage of hibernation – he was to be put to sleep for thirty years, and thus he became a Sleepyhead. How has the world changed after thirty years? Will Dan find himself in the new reality? History is captivating, especially the surprising vision of a world full of all kinds of amenities. Dan’s motivation is well delineated, as are his relationships with the other characters. In addition, Heinlein quite accurately described, what the problems may be after waking up. Apparently only thirty years have passed, but – as it turned out – a lot has changed.
An unusual cat
The main character is an ingenious inventor, Dan Davis. Although he runs his own company, he is most interested in creating new prototypes. For this reason, he did not manage to get along with his partners, who were primarily profit-oriented. Apart from Dan, his cat definitely stands out. It is true that he does not have such an important role, but it must be admitted that he is a fascinating animal. I like his warlike nature and various habits. The title itself refers to one of the many habits of this tomcat. Dan’s accomplices are also important characters, i.e. Bella, a typical fatal woman – it is impossible to like her, because she will stop at nothing to achieve her goal. Besides, it is impossible to say many kind words about Miles.
Is it worth investing in shares in Służka?
The door to summer was issued in a hardcover, it is difficult to find major flaws in the design. However, I did come across one error in a live page on the last page, and I have doubts about the announcement on the cover. In my opinion, it explores too much, it would be enough to delete one sentence and it would be fine, and so you know from the beginning what it’s all about. It is a pity that the reader was not even given a chance to believe in the crazy theories of Dan Davis and his friend …
Will the door to summer be found?
The door to summer presents an interesting reality, the vision of the world after 2000 seems to be particularly interesting. Of course, Heinlein fancied quite a lot, which is why amazing machines appear on the pages of the novel. The biggest advantage is the Sleepyheads theme – the author showed various aspects related to this industry. For example, problems with adjusting to the new reality. They concern not only the issue of work, housing, but also such details as the appearance of new words. After reading a 2000 newspaper, Dan is unable to understand some of the articles. At the same time, the plot about the scam of Davis’s accomplices and the related consequences was well developed. Heinlein has created an interesting reality and characters to like or even hate. The door to summer is an example of a solid science fiction story that is definitely worth knowing.
