Gaiman has many outstanding, intriguing and original works to his credit. Could his vision of the Grim Reaper be surprising?
The amazing work of Neil Gaiman
I appreciate the works created by Neil Gaiman , especially his creativity. For this reason, I always willingly immerse myself in the worlds he created. So far, I’ve barely licked the Sandman universe in Books of Magic . Fortunately, Death is a fairly independent position. In the first story, Sen mentions some events that took place earlier, but this does not affect the reception of the whole. So, if someone would just like to see Gaiman’s vision of personified death, then he can be tempted by this comic. Coming to the point, there are seven stories on over three hundred pages, of which the two longest are divided into three chapters. In the first story titledThe sound of her wings together with Dream we get to know what Death’s work looks like! Another story tells about the drama of a woman who would like to die but cannot. In the first of the longest comics, The High Price of Life , Death spends one day on Earth as an ordinary mortal. Together with a boy she met by chance, she enjoys every moment of life! Death in Veniceinstead, it tells about a man who once saw the most beautiful woman in the world. And he didn’t stop thinking about her, he even wanted to see her again. The more so that she expected him to help … with opening the gate to the abandoned estate. The plot itself in all these stories is not the most important thing, because it often serves as an excuse to reflect on death and the meaning of life. Interestingly, at the end of the volume there is a short story in which Death, out of concern for the readers’ health, shows how to use condoms!
What interesting can the Grim Reaper say about life?
Gaiman’s Death exudes joy, energy, it is simply impossible not to like her. She seems to be a much nicer and kinder person than Sen because she is empathetic and helpful. Plus, it looks cute; her pale complexion, disheveled black hair and gothic style of dress draw attention . Although I prefer darker visions of Death, the protagonist created by Gaiman captivated me. I also liked Sexton from The Price of Life . I was especially captivated by his approach to the world, because he wants to commit suicide because he sees no sense in human life. All the stories are of a decent standard, although none of them are particularly memorable. On the other hand, the second longest comic, Full of Life , performs the worstbecause I think he’s too talkative. Often there are as many as sixteen or twelve frames on one page, in which we see only the face of a given character and a speech bubble filled with several sentences. In my opinion, the character of Death is more interesting than the detailed story of his private life.
Lovely Death
The graphics are good, especially the character of Death. She looks gorgeous in every frame, as does her brother Sen. However, none of the scenes are likely to stay in my memory for long. If only because the sixteen frames on the page are rather not encouraging to admire the lines of cartoonists. However, I was particularly impressed by the rich gallery filled with images of Death drawn by various artists. From curiosities – the collection opens with an introduction written by the singer Tori Amos. I have no major objections to the release, as usual Egmont released a solid product!
Can you deal with Death?
If Gaiman had his fingers in something, you’d expect it to be at least very good. So it is this time. It is true that this comic did not appeal to me as much as Probable Histories or Books of Magic , but I do not regret a single moment spent with this position. Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed, because Death is a simple, reflective, moral story with the participation of the title character, and I expected something a little more spectacular. Nevertheless, Gaiman’s Death impressed me in every way, and I’m glad I got to see a completely different picture of the Grim Reaper.
