There are many demanding board games on the market. Does Teotihuacan Daniela Tascini stand out from the crowd of Euro games?
It’s time to send the workers to work
Teotihuacanit is a typical Euro Cup, so we will not experience much climate in it, but it will enable us to reliably start gray cells. Mastering the rules is not easy, but the gameplay itself is quite simple. It is enough to play the first game to perfectly find yourself in the mechanisms contained here. We have three available cube workers. They perform an action in one of eight locations, moving clockwise up to three locations. In addition, after performing the action, they advance and then the cube is turned to the side with more holes. Thanks to this, they are better at some locations, although sometimes the number of our workers is more important than their quality. The most important activities are collecting cocoa (needed to perform most actions), performing rituals (allows you to move along the paths of temples, and thus you get interesting bonuses) or obtaining resources. With the resources you earn, you can build a great stepped pyramid, decorate it, or build houses that allow you to move along the Alley of the Dead track. Thanks to these three activities, you earn a considerable number of Victory Points, along with a few other perks. The game lasts for three rounds, unless the pyramid is completed early. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the worker who gets promoted for the fifth time (the cube is turned to six) dies and the younger worker will take his place. However, thanks to his death, you can also get useful perks, such as cocoa, moving on the temple track or getting a new helper. Beautiful step pyramid
The design is solid – wooden elements, large cubes, decent cardboard markers and boards, and an impressive board. The most important, however, are the pyramid tiles, which are simply fabulous. After building a pyramid out of them and decorating it with additional tiles, it is impossible not to admire the fruits of your hard work. Although the atmosphere in this game will not be felt, the graphics and the execution of all elements are delightful. The instructions are clearly written, numerous examples are given, which makes it easier to interact with the game, although no help card has been added, and some symbols are not very intuitive at the beginning. The board raises doubts, because the scoring description was pressed there a bit by force, which makes it less legible. Also, it is a pity that the Alley of the Dead track does not have some decent field number zero.
Is Teotihuacan worth visiting?
I will not hide that TeotihuacanI liked it very much. This is a decent representative of its genre, in which many interesting mechanics combine in a phenomenal way. The workers theme is just brilliant. You have to be really careful to gather a few workers with a strength of four or five in one place and perform the most powerful action of the location. Moreover, on the one hand, we want them to develop, but on the other hand, we strive for their death, because it brings tangible profits. Building a pyramid and decorating it is a lot of fun – this is basically a game in the game, because you need to match the symbols on the tiles to score as many points as possible. Puzzle game elements in this type of game? This is an original and interesting idea. In addition, it can be combined in various ways with rituals, actions and temples. Creating inconspicuous combos is a lot of fun here. It’s a decent strategy game where it’s worth thinking a few moves ahead – since we can’t get our workers back, it’s worth making the most of the actions in each location we encounter on the road. The replayability of the stand is also amazing. The distribution of starting resources will be different each time, and so will the location of our workers. In addition, there is a random distribution of discovery tokens. And that’s not all, because there are also many other variable elements (rotation of action boards and variable bonuses in the palace). Due to the pandemic, I did not manage to play the game with a larger squad, but I must admit that it is worth making the best use of actions in each location that we meet on the road. Due to the pandemic, I did not manage to play the game with a larger squad, but I must admit thatTeotihuacan works great when playing with two people. Dice in other colors limit our possibilities, so it is still quite tight on the board. I could talk about the advantages of this position even longer, but in order not to be so rosy, I will also mention some shortcomings.
It goes without saying that while sourcing resources and building is fun, there are actually only two main ways to victory. First of all, you have to invest either in the pyramid or in the Avenue of the Dead. It is these two aspects that generate the most victory points, and therefore some of the action seems less tempting. While I wish there were more such lucrative avenues of development here, Teotihuacan , on the other handis one of the few games in which we have any real goal (apart from scoring imaginary victory points), which is to build a pyramid. A seemingly interesting way to earn Victory Points would be to collect masks, but these unfortunately appear randomly. Also, I appreciate the solo mode in this game, but it didn’t really convince me. While I was enjoying my turn, operating Teotibot, which was intended to mimic the actions of other players, was a bit of a hassle for me.
Is it worth building pyramids?
Teotihuacan is not without its drawbacks, but there are many more advantages to it. The great replayability of the base itself as well as the mechanisms it contains, such as building a pyramid, cubes serving as workers or moving along the paths of temples, are amazing. The solid workmanship makes a good impression: wooden resources, beautiful pyramid tiles and durable cardboard elements. This is probably the only euro in which I want to play even every day.
