The French Giganci series appeared on the Polish market almost a year ago. The first volume delighted and gave hope for more and more story adventures. The reviewed volume – Célestin – is the fourth and, as it can be presumed, the penultimate. Although…who knows?
Always on the adventure
After reading Erin, we got to know the adventures of Siegfried , and then the siblings: Bora and Leap . Each of the heroes was chosen to meet the giant and fight evil with him. In the reviewed volume – Célestin – the titular boy works with his mother in a coltan mine in the Congo. He is extremely talented and easily fixes all the surrounding equipment belonging to the supervisors. The reader also quickly learns that Célestin builds a robot from the things found in the landfill (he also receives some elements as a thank you for the work done). The finished machine, as you probably guessed, comes to life and becomes the boy’s best friend. Tyrl – because that’s his name – is a metal giant who can take control of machines and change his body at will (like a robot), he also loves motor oil and… he likes to make music. Tyrl, on the other hand, hates water. Thanks to the robot, Célestin gains a better understanding of how each engine works and acquires the ability to command all kinds of metal devices.
Famous authors
The series is still co-created – on the cover we can see the names / pseudonyms of as many as four authors. Written by Lylian, art by James Christ, cover design by art director Paul Drouin, and color by Lorien. Knowing these details, you should not be surprised that the inside of the volume is so colorful! The graphics have been prepared with the greatest care, contain a lot of details and make the latest volume of Giantswe want to read (watch) many times. A certain innovation characteristic of the series is also the placement of the title page a little further in the comic – it is preceded by an introduction, somewhat reminding the reader of the atmosphere of the previous volumes, but it does not repeat the content. An excellent translation from French was prepared by Nika Sztorc. Congratulations to the translator!
Reflection
The authors have accustomed us to the theme of the series. They also delighted us with the visual aesthetics. In the volume under review we have an accumulation of many threads and it is impossible to read it without knowing the previous ones. We can try, but – I warn you – it will not be very comfortable. The action sometimes speeds up, sometimes slows down – the authors adjust the pace to the length of the comic and the content they want to include in it. Tip for parents of younger readers: the subject matter of the Célestin volume seems a bit more complex (we even watch a conference of UN members…), and there is a lot of blood, so if you know your child’s sensibilities, judge if this is the right comic for him. The finale of the story in this volume may also surprise, especially since we will have to wait several months for the next story. I wish you patience – also for myself.
