Inspired by ancient history – a review of the book “The Saga of Oderyk”

In the novel, we follow the fate of Oderyk, for whom being a military man is practically his whole life. At the beginning of the book, he is the centurion of the Empire, so even though he was not born into a wealthy family, his career is moving in the right direction. We are witnessing a meeting of high-ranking army commanders on the defense of the city of Merburg, which is about to be attacked by the Adlów, posing a serious threat to the entire state. Oderic comes up with the idea of ​​successfully repelling the attack, which turns out to be a huge success. Soon after these events, he is promoted and urgently summoned to the capital of the Empire. On the spot, it turns out that all his successes are the result of enormous manipulation, and Oderic himself is drawn into a political game of taking power in the Empire.

For history fans

The saga of Odericis clearly inspired by the history of ancient Rome. It manifests itself, inter alia, in in the descriptions of the fights and the cover of the novel itself. In addition to following the main character, the author presents us with something like chronicles describing the history of the Empire and its customs and beliefs. It is a world where both power and constant expansion seem to be the most important. We get to know the narrative from the perspective of a third person, and the language used by the author matches the characters living in this world. Due to the fact that we mainly see battle-hardened, tough soldiers here, curses often appear. There is also a lot of blood spilled on the pages of the novel. In such a world, torn by wars and behind the scenes, full of conspiracies and attempts to seize power, Oderic must find his place. Initially drunk with numerous successes, he has to be careful at every step, not sure who he can trust. Very self-confident and deeply devoted to himself, the hero will have to undergo a transformation to have any chances in this game.

Summary

The saga of Oderyk takes the reader into a world full of intrigue, in which we observe the main character trying to find his place and inner balance in it. If you are looking for a book that will be able to draw you in for longer, Oderyk’s fate will be a really good choice in my opinion. I am also very curious to see where this story will turn in the future.
