The fourth edition of the nationwide horror review Fest Makabry is behind us. Every year, the program includes the most interesting and original arthouse productions of the world horror cinema.
In previous editions, we could see, among others: Korean Lament , a biblical parable about subconscious fears of demons; Zombie express , a dynamic action movie set in a hermetic space; Voices from the Wall , a gothic horror film about loss starring Emilia Clarke; or Healed , showing the fate of the heroes after inventing a remedy for the plague. What can we find at the popular film festival this time?
Trauma
Koko-di Koko-da (dir. Johannes Nyholm)
Description: A happy married couple suddenly loses their daughter. Their firstborn mysteriously dies in the hospital after the family is taken there due to her mother’s food poisoning. Six months after this event, the mourning couple decides to go to nature for a weekend. An innocent foray, motivated by the need to rest, turns into a real nightmare when on their way they meet an eccentric troupe, hungry for brutal murder.
Koko-di Koko-dais a psychoanalytic study directed by Johannes Nyholm, a symbolic image of coping with loss and an insightful vivisection of experiencing mourning and gradual falling into madness. This is not an ordinary Freudian cross-section, but also a mystical session that breaks down the human psyche, confronts the characters with their subconscious fears and trauma. The director skillfully and sensitively creates an atmosphere of anxiety and mystery, using the resources of the natural environment, while exposing the weaknesses of the protagonists with a pedantic manner. Surgical precision combined with the “von Trier’s” theory of chaos and human downfall, an allegorical story and a high level of artistry, testify to the extraordinary skills of the Swedish director. Scandinavian horror is one of the best psychological pictures of the last few years.
