In Raimi’s land – review of the DVD release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”

Since the first declaration from Kevin Feige that the continuation of Doctor Strange will be maintained in a horror atmosphere, it seemed that the ideal candidate for the director of this project is Sam Raimi (known for his cult horror films, and at the same time the “father” of the success of Spider-Man). Mana with Tobey Maguire). However, the questions remained whether the creator would smuggle his style into the heavily clichéd MCU and receive a lot of creative freedom, and how big would Bruce Campbell’s cameo be?

Films from the production line? Certainly not this one!

In the next part of Doctor Strange’s adventures, our hero meets on his way an extraordinary teenager endowed with great power, with whom he sets off through a multiverse full of dangers. Stephen, with the help of Wong, must save America Chavez from his former ally and arguably the most powerful being in the MCU.

There are very few MCU directors who have managed to bring their trademark style to Marvel movies. In fact, only James Gunn and Taika Waititi have had an artistic influence on their paintings, which makes them stand out from the rest of the productions from the universe. However, the vast majority of comic book adaptations were shot in rigid frames. Sometimes we even get the impression that they look like they were released from the same production line (as mentioned, for example, by She-Hulk in her series). Sam Raimi was given probably one of the most interesting characters in the MCU, who has not yet seen a decent solo film. The creator has already proven that he is also perfect in superhero cinema, but a lot of time has passed since his Spider-Man times and we could have had doubts

Evil dead in Doctor Strange?

In the multiverse of madnessis, above all, the perfect mix of superhero cinema and horror. On the screen we observe fast-paced action, amazing special effects and well-drawn characters. The script efficiently shows Strange’s development and his inner transformation after the skirmish with Thanos. He is still a cocky master of magical arts, but an individual for whom he can give his life becomes important. This is quite an interesting direction in the MCU, in which the Avengers become mentors to younger heroes (just like Hawkeye, Thor or Hulk), but their successors, so far, lack the appropriate charisma. The attention of the viewer is stolen by Wong, who bravely supports Stephen in the fight, and at the same time throws a whole lot of funny one-liners. I’m not convinced of Strange’s conflict with Wanda, because it has no logical justification.

Surprisingly interesting, but not adding anything to the plot, cameo of the Illuminati, especially Xavier and Mr. Fantastic. Unfortunately, such a powerful mutant as Professor X should not let Wanda be killed in such a simple way. It was similar with Reed Richards (“the greatest brain” on earth), who revealed the power of Black Bolt completely senselessly, which led to the heroes’ doom. Marvel once again confirmed that fanservice is key for him (reusing Patrick Stewart or the leader of fancastings John Krasicki), but it seems to me that the group of these superheroes could have been used much better (just like the three Spider-Man).

By far the best element of the film is its horror style. Raimi plays with convention, making Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness the bloodiest and scariest picture in the MCU. It is full of jump scares, bogeymen, gore elements, the living dead and flying heads, typical of horror cinema. Interestingly, the director made sure that his film included easter eggs for the iconic Evil Dead (including the most important one, i.e. Bruce Campbell fighting with his own hand).

A release without magic

The DVD release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is another solid entry from the Galapagos . The cover is decorated with a poster from the film, while the album is decorated only with the title of the painting. After firing, we get moving graphics, which is the background for a simple and intuitive menu.

The DVD has been deprived of additional scenes, but we get the option of choosing several language versions. The publishing house, as always, took care of the quality of the release in terms of visuals and sound, thanks to which Doctor Strange will look great on our TV and computer screens.

Sam Raimi is still in good shape

Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness stands out from other Marvel productions, thanks to a good plot, elements of horror, the characteristic atmosphere of Raimi’s films, interesting characters and a phenomenal, charismatic Benedict. This is one of the most interesting MCU productions, and certainly the best Phase 4 movie so far. This is definitely a must-have item in your Marvel movie DVD collection.
