In a fairy-tale land – review of the board game “Dragons”

The board game Dragons discussed in this review is the third part of the series. It takes us into the world of fairy-tale dreamlands. The proposal is distinguished not only by the subject matter, but also by the graphic design created by Marcin Minor.

Rat-a-Tat Cat

The game is based on the rules of the great hit Rat-a-Tat Cat , which was popular in the United States in 1995. Its authors are Monty and Ann Stambler, co-founders of Gamewright . Dreamy themes, beautiful illustrations and simple rules connect all three parts of the series: Dream , Dragons , Ravens , but this board game is the most unique of all! As Jarosław Basałyga from the Nasza Księgarnia Publishing House writes, “[games] were created by people with extensive experience in the board game industry. We gave the games a new theme and a unique graphic design, making them the most beautiful series of games on the market. ” Dragons is a card game à la Solitaire– simple, with high repeatability and scalability. We have a lot of fun creating dreams!

Elements of the game

The box contains 52 cards (including 40 dragon lands and 12 raven lands), 12 dragon tokens, a notebook and a pencil. The goal of the game is to go on a journey through the dreamlands, where we will meet dragons and ravens. Finally, we have to create the best possible dream, i.e. get the lowest number of points. And here are the doubts. Our dream arrangement is actually putting cards on the table, or rather – consistently replacing them. Apart from beautiful graphics, we don’t create any magical stories or plot anything wrong. Well, each player is dealt six cards and has to keep an eye on that number (a player’s dream consists of only six cards). During the game, we add cards from the open or hidden pile to our dream. To do this, we need to remove one card from our merry table cluster. And actually, if it weren’t for the raven cards, our game would end way too soon. In the bird realms, we have the Raven Circle (value 10 points, the card should be immediately added to your sleep), Water Reflection (allows you to copy the value of the card lying on the left or right side in a dream), Raven’s Nest (change the places of two cards). As you can see, the ravens can mess up the game!

Alternatively

The creators made sure that the rules of the game were explained in detail. The manual is very clear, and the proposed examples leave no unresolved doubts. The game may consist of three rounds, but we can freely increase their number if we want. Like the number of players. The creators propose three variants that affect the end of the game: the final number of points (100 score = victory of the player with the fewest points, haha!), The final number of rounds (the game ends after the eighth round), only the discard pile (only one pile for players and, in addition, open). Dragonsis the perfect game for a lazy, rainy afternoon. We have no negative interaction or complicated rules here. The game is characterized by high randomness, which not every player will like. In addition, the best dragon gameplay awaits us when we find at least two companions. Playing in a duet causes weariness and does not give much pleasure (interaction between players is a monotonous exchange of cards). I also wish there were so few special cards. Their greater number would certainly make the game more attractive.
