I am a unicorn, so I win – that is the review of “Phoebe and Her Unicorn. Unicorn Crossing” vol. 5

Although they differ in many ways, they have developed a deep friendship. Full of ideas and an interesting character, the Phoebe girl and the most beautiful unicorn, Marigold, Heavenly Snorkels return to the market in the fifth volume of their adventures.

In a word of introduction: the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series is a collection of strip comics. If you’re a fan, or even read Garfield or the Peanuts , you know what this style is about. The author is Dana Simpson, awarded with American awards for children’s creativity, who is responsible for both the script and the graphic design.

What’s new (except that Marigold is still gorgeous)?

Although nine-year-old Phoebe and nobody-not-knows-how many-year-old Marigold met some time ago and had many different adventures, you can count on completely new stories in this part as well. The collection does not have a clear leitmotif, but it is definitely dominated by stripes in which the school nemesis of the main character appears – Dakota’s peer. The girl has a habit of making Phoebe’s life miserable, but she doesn’t seem to care too much about it, because growing up provides her with many other reasons for reflection or dilemma (such as what to wear for Halloween or what do adults do at parties?). Of course, the stripes reappear with comic parents (who prove how geeky they are this time) and with the only male friend – Max. Some things happen in winter, and Marigold also reveals what is her favorite book and why she does not remember it, and Phoebe herself has little problems with mobilizing to read. Nothing fancy, but the comic is absorbing practically all at once.

Wake up the inner unicorn within you!

The strongest point about the series by Dana Simpson is definitely her life. The comic shows the hardships and ills of adolescence, but it does it in a very pleasant, sometimes slightly humorous way. Younger readers will surely find themselves in these realities and will quickly bond with the main characters, as it is impossible not to like them. Phoebe is a direct individualist who was often misunderstood and felt lonely, until she finally met Marigold the Heavenly Snorkels, confident, and sometimes even a delicious unicorn, who is the perfect opposite and sometimes complementing her character. This duo shows how great the value of friendship is and how much one can give, receive and develop from it.

Reading itself is magic

Reading about this duo will probably never get boring for me. Although it is a series aimed at younger audiences, each album proves that adults are also able to derive a lot of satisfaction from reading it. Although the newest volume was a bit less fun than the previous ones, I still rate it positively, and I highly recommend the series itself! Fly and buy, because such titles must be supported.
