Hugh, what did you get yourself into? – review of the movie “Reminiscencja”

What does title mean?

The reminiscence intrigued me with the title itself, or more precisely with a word with which I had not come across before. After the dictionary of the Polish language, it means: “the memory of things, past matters and reflections related to them” *. It also turned out to be associated with the term used in psychology to describe the process or effect of revealing unconscious or forgotten memories. Apparently, with age, the emotional saturation of memories decreases in favor of those with a positive color **. Meanwhile, when it comes to the translation of the word “reminiscence” from the English – it also simply means “memory” itself. So there is no way out, memories should be the main theme of the movie!

What is the movie about?

Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackam) is a lonely veteran living in flooded Miami after the climate disaster. Together with Watts (Thandie Newton), he runs a memories business: he offers clients the opportunity to relive their chosen memories – they use a complicated machine to do so. (Unfortunately) one day, an intriguing Mae appears in his life, and when she suddenly disappears, Nick decides to find her, discovering several secrets.

When ambitions take over

Over time, Christopher Nolan mastered the game to perfection (although in Tenethe completely forgot about the characters and the relations between them), becoming one of the most recognizable puzzle makers (or, if you like, films, brainstorms). No wonder that it becomes an inspiration for others. Worse when inspiration becomes blinders and the puzzles have a complexity level for the age level 6+. During the screening, I had the painful impression that Lisa Joy was trying to mix Memento and post-apo cinema and (ineptly) weave a moralizing note into it – when it refers to humanity that led to a climate catastrophe and recreated capitalism in new conditions. This could have been one of the most interesting axes of the film, and … is only a side story. The creator of the film added an action movie full of shots, tough guys and tough guys, not really sketching their past, suggesting only in a totally American tone, that their service in the war (of which we learn little) is … essential. And that’s it. Everything that had a chance to be scripted was buried under the sign of a great, blind romance. Thus, the potential of the entire world depicted was not only unused, but simply ruined.

Wysiedzieć to sztuka

Reminiscencja sięga po konwencję kina noir, a przy wprowadzaniu naczelnej femme fatale korzysta ze wszystkich dostępnych środków filmowych: fryzura, suknia, muzyka, oświetlenie i kadrowanie imitujące wodzenie wzrokiem. Niestety, ale kreacja ta wychodzi fatalnie. W 2021 roku nie wystarczy jeden do jednego wykorzystać schematu, osadzając go w nowych realiach (świata po katastrofie). By zadziałał, trzeba go odświeżyć, zredefiniować. Nie wystarczy jedynie pokazać, że protagonista jest gotów porzucić dla pięknej kobiety wszelkie swoje mętnie przedstawione w filmie zasady i rozpocząć za nią pogoń albo odwet (bo czym to było, to wciąż trudno mi określić).

Trudno było wysiedzieć w kinie. Nie wiem kiedy ostatnio zdarzyło mi się mieć nadzieję, że to już naprawdę koniec – i mieć ją czterokrotnie. Widzowie (ponownie!) otrzymali powtórkę scen, które nie wnosiły niczego nowego ani do historii, ani do jej rozwiązania. Stanowiły jedynie rozwleczony wizualno-narracyjny poemat o miłości głównego bohatera do swojej nieuchwytnej ukochanej. A przecież wystarczyło sięgnąć po relację między nim a Watts, by zaserwować widzom pełną emocji opowieść o długoletniej przyjaźni. Ten wątek aż krzyczał o uwagę. Niestety, w tym filmie nic nie zostało pogłębione, wszystko trzyma się kurczowo powierzchni, a przecież w opowieści o zalaniu świata aż prosi się o głębię.

Podsumowanie

Podczas seansu można się pogubić, ponieważ filmowe puzzle nie chcą do siebie pasować: niby mamy piękny i szczegółowy obrazek do ułożenia, ale puzzle są tak kiepskiej  jakości i tak źle wycięte, że nie da się go ułożyć. Reminiscencja obiecuje wniknięcie do ludzkiej psychiki, zabawę z czasem i diagnozę świata po katastrofie. Tymczasem wciska nam romans w pudełku z napisem “science ficition i thriller”.
