How to survive on the web? – review of the Blu-ray edition of “Demolka Ralph on the Internet”

After a nostalgic adventure in the world of slot games, Ralph and Wandelopa set out to conquer the Internet, a medium closer to the modern young audience. How did the nice duo cope with the new environment?

Beware of the plug removed

Sequel Ralph demolition begins some time after the first part, when our hero through the power of friendship discovered that it really is not bad and can get pleasure from your life. The joy, however, does not last long, as the machine with Sugar Rush is damaged as a result of an accident . A failure threatens to pull the plug from the socket, which will bring destruction to all the heroes living in the game, including Ralph’s friend – Wandelopa.

The only salvation may be to get the missing machine component through the Ebay website. To this end, the two of us set off on a journey through the meanders of the virtual world, social media and technology.

I admit that I had high expectations regarding the way the Internet was presented in the film. Disney animations are characterized by the fact that often fictional worlds are shown in a very fancy way as specific cities with their own lives. It should be no different here, but the web seems surprisingly… ordinary. Sure, the world looks beautiful, but a futuristic city is not a very original choice. However, that does not mean that there is no room for some interesting ideas. I liked the theme of the interaction between digital characters and people in the form of avatars traveling the Internet.

Again about interpersonal relationships

The story itself is not surprising. The film uses a well-known story template with a moral in which the friendship of the main characters is put to the test. In the new world, Ralph, trying to earn a spare part for the slot machine, devotes himself to the career of Youtuber (or rather Buzzztuber, as there is no license from Google) and creates viral clips. Meanwhile, Wandelopa discovers a brand new racing game that allows her dreams of a little adrenaline to come true. Thus, the two of us focus on other goals and unconsciously begin to drift away from each other. As I said, it is nothing innovative, but such films are usually not watched for the intricate plot, but for likeable characters and good humor. In this field, Demolka Ralph works very well on the Internet .

As in the previous movie by Ralph and Wandelopa, it is simply impossible not to like and a pair of contrasting characters immediately gets our attention. However, these are not the only characters that stand out in the animation. The real gem is the scene where all the canonical Disney and Pixar princesses meet, so eagerly used in the trailers. There are many more jokes and references to well-known brands or websites here. The creators have also prepared attractions for fans of Star Wars or even the Marvel cinematic universe. Most importantly, these are not only empty easter eggs that only show characters from the popular series for a while, which was a problem for Ready Player One .

I just wonder if there has been a bit of overemphasis on this issue, caring more for the sense of humor of the older audience, leaving the younger audience mostly slapstick jokes. I also missed even a slight criticism of the problems of the Internet, such as “free” games or the pursuit of likes and views, although an ideal opportunity was created for this.

Virtual beauty

One cannot say a bad word about the setting of the film. Over the years, Disney has accustomed us to the fact that maybe their animations are kept in a very similar visual style, but in terms of quality, they are at the forefront. Wreck-it Ralph on the Internet simply impresses with the richness of details. Often there are a lot of elements on the screen, but never once did I feel that it was lacking transparency. A few catchy songs were also given attention, including a promotional track by Imagine Dragons.

Speaking of the audio-video side, it would be appropriate to devote a few words to the optical media releases that were released on the Polish market thanks to the Galapagos company. In terms of content, the Blu-ray edition is the most interesting. The main advantage for me is the presence of different language versions (of course, the DVD version also includes these elements). Although the team responsible for Polish dubbing did a very good job, and Olaf Lubaszenko shines in the title role, the original path looks even better and I just always appreciate the choice. On the technical side, it is worth mentioning that the English track was recorded in the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 standard, and the other language options are in Dolby Digital 5.1 format.

When it comes to additional content, the behind-the-scenes material is the most interesting, in which the creators talk about the process of making the film and explain some creative decisions. Removed scenes are also interesting. However, the specificity of animated films is such that most of the unrealized fragments are presented in a very raw form, often in the form of concept sketches. This does not mean, however, that there is nothing to watch. In return, we receive a lot of comments and explanations, thanks to which the entire material lasts nearly half an hour

Among the smaller, but still interesting additions, one should mention a short guide to easter eggs from the movie. You can see some really well hidden flavors this way. The album also includes a package of music videos and a nice reportage about creating the soundtrack with a guest appearance of the aforementioned Imagine Dragons. For me, however, the material Buzzztubowe cats is a complete misunderstanding . Imagine a compilation of funny cat clips, but in an animated version. I have no idea who came up with something like this and found it interesting.

Summary

Wreck-It Ralph is a classic, successful sequel. The story may not be original, but its heroes cannot be denied their charm. I admit, however, that in comparison to the predecessor, some supporting characters have been marginalized. I’d love to see a spin-off developing the idea of a princess crossover as compensation for this state of affairs. I must also praise the Blu-ray release. The album contains enough interesting materials to recommend it to anyone who hesitates to expand their library with this title. Only owners of 4K TVs will be dissatisfied, because movies from the Disney stable are still not available in Poland in this version.

We would like to thank the publisher, Galapagos Films, for making a copy of the film available for review.
