Briefly about the plot
Star Wars comic . Path of Destiny is the first volume of the series, bringing readers closer to the events happening between the films. Of course, this is not the first attempt to “complete” the story contained in the Saga. This time the script was prepared by Charles Soule. The author previously dealt with, inter alia, the series about the fate of Lord Vader. The story of The Path of Destiny begins practically immediately after the end of “The Empire Strikes Back”. Rebels devise a plan to free Han Solo. Luke tries to find his lightsaber, and Lando Calrissian regains control of Cloud City and helps his friend.
How to show emotions?
The film after the screening leaves the viewer with a huge number of questions and understatements, which can be observed, for example, on internet forums. The problem lies in its specific form. First of all, it has a limited time and certain threads cannot be fully developed. Second, it’s sometimes hard to show the emotions of the characters, especially when the movie is packed with action and special effects. Then this extremely important element of the characters’ inner experiences, their reactions to certain events, is somewhat diminished. Personally, I have always been interested in how Luke handled the information he was the son of Lord Vader. Additionally, it was puzzling how it was possible that Skywalker had so much power during his return to Tatooine, with the heroes rescuing Han Solo from Jabba’s hands.
Understand Luke
“Paths of Destiny” helps us understand the figure of the young Jedi, as we become witnesses of his internal dilemmas. The loss of a hand seems nothing compared to the burden which the truth about the young man’s origins has become. He must deal with his responsibility to fight the Empire, to be the “last Jedi”, to be his legacy. Luke is resentful, shocked, confused, and it’s quite understandable. He is afraid of what will happen when others find out the truth. Will he suddenly become an enemy and an outcast from a hero and friend? The protagonist goes on a journey, before he goes to rescue Han, he must discover new secrets and gain powerful strength to fight both the literal and the internal. The dark side of the force is calling. Luke must find his destiny, his own path, and become a powerful Jedi.
For the heroes to fully understand certain events, they must become familiar with the story. Yes, and here too, Luke learns about his own father’s past, the Clone Wars, and the events of the prequel trilogy. Obviously, the young Skywalker gets the most airtime. However, the plot of Land seems to be very interesting, as it allows us to notice the change that has taken place in this character at this stage.
Comic book aesthetics
The line by artist Jesús Saiz is characterized by high expressiveness and dynamics, which also allows for a great depiction of the characters’ emotions and their gestures. And also for spectacular and lively battle scenes. In terms of graphics, there are no shortcomings here, the panels are transparent, although there are moments of too fast transitions between fragments of scenes. I think one more element is worth paying attention to. The foundations of a good comic book are a well-structured plot, great graphics, but also words put into the mouths of the characters. Not only the emotions depicted on the faces, gestures, but also dialogues, the way his inner thoughts are shaped – they shape the protagonist and, consequently, the plot. The dialogues in the comic book are light and fit perfectly. Of course, we will find here many dilemmas, pathos and tragedies, but all this is accompanied by a large dose of humor,Star Wars – Lando’s trip to Tatooine teems with this.
Write down, paint Luke and Lando
It won’t be revealing to say that the characters look exactly like in the movies, and therefore Luke has the face of Mark Hamill or Leia Carrie Fisher, that was basically how it was from the beginning. Marvel also began to use such treatments in their series about superheroes, where the characters began to resemble the actors playing them.
But it’s not enough to recreate the look. You have to breathe life into these drawings and figures. Watching successive frames from Lando, you get the impression that we are in fact still in the process of Star Wars , and the actor playing Calrissian continued to play his role for us. The artist managed to capture the spirit of both the character and the actor himself.
Translation and nostalgia
Of course, as I wrote before, the image is not everything. In comics, the word also plays a big role. Sometimes, however, the translation of texts does not allow for the faithful rendering of jokes, this is due to, among others, language and cultural issues. Poles have a problem with “typical” English humor, and our speech is also not the simplest. In Destiny’s Path, some of the dialogues seem a bit artificial and even die-hard Saga fans will find it difficult to empathize with the story. Fortunately, there are really few such moments, in which the translator’s contribution can be fully perceived. Comics like Destiny’s Pathsthey allow fans of the Saga to return to the best stories and movies in the opinion of many. In some way they make it possible to forget or completely ignore the fact of the existence of episodes VII-IX. The procedure of storytelling between the main events has already proven itself in the case of animated series – The Clone Wars . Comics and books also allow you to discover other aspects of the saga, to expand the canon.
