How I unleashed the Dead World War – review of “Zombie Army 4: Dead War”

Zombie Army , as a kind of development of the Sniper Elite game , draws the best from its prototype, i.e. great, stealth-simulation mechanics. The problem is that it juxtaposes it with probably the most hackneyed topic, i.e. zombies, but it does it well enough that we have already seen the fourth edition. The question is, do we really need it?

Nazi Zombie Killer 3000

The first part of the Second World War Sniper Elite was created at a time when this topic was very popular. Around 2005, when the title made its debut, players had some really good positions at their disposal, such as the then blooming Call of Duty or the Medal of Honor, which was already showing a slight downward trend .. Nevertheless, the production of the Rebellion studio approached this topic from a slightly different angle, which – unlike the Activision and EA games – was much closer to stealth or even a simulator. As I was relatively young at the time, I had a hard time dealing with some of the levels at times, so the game ended up in the basket after a while. I myself was offended by the production of the Rebellion studio and joined Captain Price in Call of Duty . Well, that’s the age. I returned to Sniper Elite a few years later with the premiere of the amazing second part.

The subject of Nazi zombies was no longer anything new at that time, because around 2009 Treyarch expanded Call of Duty World at War to include the zombie mode, which was more or less about staying under the onslaught of dead men for as long as possible. We also had a peculiar marriage of World War II with a hint of fantasy in Wolfenstein in Return to the Castle , so – let’s be honest – it was basically nothing extraordinary. Nevertheless, the game attracted a large crowd of people, which was due to its rather relaxing nature – it did not require chaff to de-stress after a hard day at work. Considering the mechanics of Call of Duty , it was not difficult to make this game a zombie shooter . Though it didn’t seem like thatSniper Elite will provide fertile ground for such revelations, but the reality turned out to be different. Sniper Elite Nazi Zombie Army was not particularly innovative, but guaranteed a lot of fun. Surprisingly, the developers managed to translate a fairly advanced gameplay model from a “serious” prototype into a decent zombie shooter . Nevertheless, I did not expect that the title would have four parts. Although the story could be closed on the third installment, when Hitler was finally finally defeated, for some reason Rebellion studio decided to release Zombie Army 4: Dead War.

The zombies are attacking again!

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is in fact a typical zombie shooter through and through . Why? Well, because we have relatively simple, tunnel maps dotted with hordes of dummies just waiting to sink the remains of their decaying fangs into us. As you can easily guess, our task is to prevent this from happening and repay the beautiful zombies for what they are. And all because in the fourth part of the Sniper Elite spin-offHitler, however, has somehow magically returned from the underworld and is once again trying to drown the world in blood. As you can guess, we have to stop him again. While the whole story seemed to have a twisted meaning by the third part of the game, the revival of the main antagonist in the title under review smacks of a reheated, slightly stale chop, though fortunately not yet carrion (as the title might suggest). Let’s agree, however, the plot is not the main weapon of Zombie Army 4: Dead War, because it actually repeats the scheme developed in the previous parts. The strongest point of Zombie Army 4: Dead War is its devilishly satisfying gameplay.

A real slaughterhouse!

Imagine it: it’s Monday, you’ve had a hard day at work and all you can think about is to vent your anger and finally relax after a difficult start to the week. I guarantee you that Zombie Army 4: Dead War will be an ideal proposition for this occasion. As strange as it sounds, the rebuke of the zombie hosts is really relaxing in the reviewed title. The developers managed to achieve something that many other similar games lack. Zombie Army 4: Dead WarIt is distinguished by a great pace of the game, neither too fast nor too slow. There are challenging moments when we run out of ammunition and explosives, and the opponents still fall out of the nearby windows, but with a little cunning you can defeat them. Another time, we can safely look around the location and collect some interesting, bonus items, of course, having killed the previously wandering around. What’s better, it gets even better when we play in co-op with friends. Only then does the fourth edition of Zombie Army really show its claw, which makes it possible to forgive the Rebellion studio for reheating the fictional cutlet without a shadow of a doubt.

It is also worth mentioning a few technical aspects of the game, such as available characters or equipment. There are four of the first ones to choose from, and each of them has certain features. My favorite was definitely Boris, a Soviet aviator with a fairly straightforward approach to life. Players can also play the role of Karl, the hero of the previous parts, Shola, who is an engineer, and Jun. Once you choose your protégé, it will be worth taking care of the appropriate set of tools to exterminate the zombie hordes. Several sniper rifles come to the rescue, including the immortal Mosin Nagant, a pair of pistols (such as the M1911) and an additional weapon in the form of an assault rifle or shotgun. Each of the equipment can be modified in terms of appearance or parameters, you just have to work for it. In case of major zombie problems,

How does it look like?

After all, Zombie Army 4: Dead War is not one of the most beautiful games on the market. The engine used, although it makes the game incredibly playable, is already old and does not look particularly extraordinary. The production looks good, but nothing else. We will not experience any fountains here – apart from, of course, the effective animation of sniper shots, known from the previous parts. It’s okay and that’s it, the models look good, the maps are even better. The visual layer is sufficient for the needs of the game. The same applies to the sound, which basically does not require much comment. The fourth installment of Zombie Armyit is not a psychological horror in which the atmosphere is built with the help of a track and sound effects. The creators bet on a solid slaughter and they do it. Is fine.

We would like to thank Cenega for the copies of the game for review (PS4).

Nasza ocena: 6/10

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is more than a solid game that is a lot of fun. The producers did not try to create extraordinary fictional constructions or dazzling bells and whistles, because there is simply no place for that in the world. The simplicity of the game and the effortless pace of the game are its strongest points, so without a shadow of a doubt it can be said that the fourth edition of the Sniper Elite spin-off is a game we needed and which will find many devoted fans.
