Mucha Comics always captivates me with the aesthetics of comic book releases. As a horror maniac, I pay special attention to the proposals from the world of horror. In Harrow County, few things will surprise you, and your anxiety will linger long after you read it.
Witches County
In the first album of the Harrow County series, the reader is given four notebooks of horror stories. All are scripted by Cullen Bunn ( The Sixth Revolver ) and illustrated by Tyler Crook ( BBPO , Bad Blood). The whole story begins with a very bloody event – the burning of the witch. However, the death sentence imposed on the woman has its consequences, as residents of Harrow County, in North Carolina, will soon find out. Emmy, haunted by nightmarish dreams, initially unaware that her life is connected with the events of years ago. On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, the truth is revealed. The action of the comic is dynamic and the reader must show full focus to catch all the elements. If we take care of the appropriate setting while reading, I am sure that you will read all four notebooks at once, and later you will regret not having a few more on hand. A story about County Harrowit is very complex and I think Bunn simplified it a bit (it’s a comic!). For some, this brevity may turn out to be a problem, but for impatient readers – salvation.
Whew, what a vibe!
Watching a comic is a lot of fun! Tyler Crook impresses with his watercolor style from beginning to end. It effectively draws the reader into an artistic game and even the smallest details of the landscape attract the eye. His line made it possible to depict both static and more dynamic scenes. The heroes’ emotions are also correctly drawn. The dark atmosphere of the comic unfolds while reading it, and that was probably Crook’s idea. Don’t forget that Harrow County. Countless Ghosts is a horror movie, so expect some spooky (macabre?) Scenes – death by hanging, burning bodies or a zombie theme. It’s spooky, but that’s what the creators wanted!
Countless ghosts
I liked the first comic books very much. Despite the fast narrative, it is impossible to get lost in the story being told. The plot is also not surprising and the reader quickly begins to understand the writer’s idea. But… it does not change the fact that the comic book fascinates with its simplicity and uniqueness. Gothicism, magical realism, dark personalities, nightmares, American folklore, style à la King, Lovecraft, Carpenter … – do you know? Do you like That means Harrow County. Countless ghosts are there for you. In addition, the publisher took care of an add-on for readers. At the end of this volume is the Harrow County Sketchbook with commentary by Bunn and Crook, and the preview of Volume Two with an endearing cover. Emma’s story fascinated me and I hope to read her sequel in the near future.
