“Chucky Doll” – the iconic slasher and role model for many of the next movies in the genre is celebrating its birthday today, so to speak of the movie. On November 9, 1988, the premiere of the painting about the killer doll took place.
The rubber boy ends up in the home of a cute six-year-old. Nobody knows that the soul of an escaped murderer entered the doll. The toy does all sorts of terrible things, but the family obviously refuses to believe the baby. Until baby Andy’s mother finds out that the doll has no batteries and talks …
The audience liked Child’s Play very much. Several things contributed to this. For the 1980s, the special effects are pretty, pretty. They must have made an impression then. Second, the concept. New and interesting ideas, such as the doll itself or the methods of killing. Then the atmosphere of the film – old buildings, narrow streets, stuffy atmosphere, darkness. Fourth, photos and camera work, building the right tension. Sometimes there is a lack of logic in the script, but the fans, used to various strange solutions in this type of film, did not pay attention to it. Now, when you look at these spiky hairstyles and clothes, the patina adds to the charm of the film.
The film stars Catherine Hicks as Karen Barclay, Chris Sarandon as Detective Mike Norris, Alex Vincent as Andy Barclay, Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray / Chucky’s voice, Dinah Manoff as Maggie Peterson and Jack Colvin as Dr. Ardmore. Alex Vincent is a sweet kid (by the way, how was he not afraid to star in THIS movie?), Catherine Hicks is great, but most of all Brad Dourif as the killer and Chucky’s voice is impressive.
The creator and screenwriter of the character Don Mancini took the names and surname of the murderer Charles Lee Ray from the data of real murderers (who thus became elements of pop culture …). He was also inspired by the “My Buddy” dolls, which had been available for sale since the mid-1980s. It took as many as 11 people to animate the doll, and its aluminum fingers were piercing through the latex it was covered with. In some scenes the doll (appropriately enlarged) was played by Ed Gale, an actor measuring 102 cm.
The success of the first part prompted the creators to almost mass-produce the next parts. Created (so far, of course) The Return of Chucky (Child’s Play 2, 1990) Chucky 3 (Child’s Play 3 , 1991 ) Chucky’s Bride (Bride of Chucky, 1998), Chucky 5: The Next Generation (Seed of Chucky) , 2004 ) The Curse of Chucky (Curse of Chucky, 2013 ) Cult of Chucky (2017) and finally Doll (2019). Which one (apart from the first one, you know) is your favorite?
What, shall we play?
