He’s a pirate! – a list of the most interesting pirates in fantasy

Ahoy land rats! As Jack Sparrow used to say: Perspective on life is looking at it through an empty rum bottle … but you can also check out the pirate brethren overview prepared by the crew of The Last Tavern for Pirate’s Day!

Jack Sparrow – Pirates of the Caribbean

Jack Sparrow … Captain Jack Sparrow is probably a character that needs no introduction. Charismatic, crazy, brilliant, clumsy and mostly drunk too. To the main character of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie seriesplayed by Johnny Depp fit all these terms. He made his debut on the silver screen in 2003 and immediately won the sympathy of millions of people around the world. Although the productions with his participation were assessed differently, there is no doubt that the cinemas were filling up for him. It is hardly surprising. You never knew what the chaotic Jack Sparrow would come up with again to cheat death. He seemingly cares about no one but himself, but in fourteen years and five films he has broken this rule more than once to save people he can call his friends.

Captain Sparrow’s future looks not very bright right now. Although there are plans for a new version of Pirates , this time the subject of this hero is rather omitted. Some talk about the need to refresh the series and do a complete reboot. Others point to the loud scandal surrounding the actor playing him as the reason for the lack of a Black Pearl commander. Whether or not Johnny Depp will ever wear his signature costume again and return to the screen with a slightly staggering step, it is certain that Captain Jack Sparrow has achieved what he cared about so much – not rum or women or even treasures, but– immortality! – Krzysiek Płociński

Bloodbeard – Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra

Bloodbeard Pirate makes a cameo appearance in films about the invincible Gauls of a village that still has not succumbed to the Roman pressure from the Rabarbarum, Relanium and Delirium camps. He contributed a great penny to the story told in the Cleopatra Mission .

It is a cheerful, coarse and rightly built figure. Her nickname came from a powerful, red beard that Frederick Barbarossa would not be ashamed of. The same beard corresponds to the red jacket, worn most often by our favorite. In addition, he has a steel helmet with horns and is girdled with a wide, black belt, like a witcher. Like the witcher, he is armed with iron, but in the form of a saber.

The pirate is a determined, confident and fierce villain. Or more precisely – grayish. It is mainly humorous in films, not entirely negative. Bad luck haunts him all the time. Although he does everything to free himself from the doom that looms over him, he still runs into Asterix and Obelix. These meetings never end well. In the Mission , Bloodbeard, wanting to loot an Egyptian ship, loses his own, because it turns out that the above-mentioned Gauls are traveling with the Egyptians. In order to avoid confrontation with them, he sinks his own ship himself.

The pirate returns several times in the film, trying to achieve his goal and be successful, but it always fails because of two mustaches. At the same time, he cannot be denied self-confidence and perseverance. With time, he also teaches his daughter the trade. As an exemplary father, he relates to her calmly and slowly explains everything. As a ship commander he is respected by his crew. At the end of the production, he even gets a job at Cleopatra’s palace operating the “effortless crane”, so ultimately his adventures do not end badly, albeit little pirate. – Wojciech Chmiel

Monkey D. Luffy – One Piece

The main character of the One Piece manga and anime  . He is the founder and captain of the infamous and powerful Straw Hat crew, as well as their strongest fighter. His lifetime dream is to become the king of pirates by finding the title treasure of One Piece left by the late Gol D. Roger.

Luffy made a name for himself for his equally pirate misdeeds of challenging the seven royal warriors of the seas, the navy and four emperors, as well as for committing high-profile crimes and acting against the Global Government. He came out victorious in most of the confrontations. For all his crimes, he has earned a gigantic reward on his head.

Luffy is an always smiling and devoted boyfriend. He always stands up for the aggrieved. Usually naive Luffy shows his more serious side at critical moments. He is then able to break all boundaries, which mainly concerns his organism. He tries to be the best captain, but because of his childish aspirations, he often causes trouble for himself and his crew. Luffy has a tragic sense of orientation in the field. It is then guided by the temperature. For example, north is where it is coldest. Moreover, he has a superhuman appetite. He can eat as much as the rest of the feasters put together. Luffy’s problem is also his honesty. He cannot lie, which has often caused him and his crew a lot of trouble. Even though Luffy is very energetic and seems to be a steadfast man who never gives up,

The One Piece series has been winning most of the world’s most read manga rankings for years. Luffy himself is one of the symbols of pop culture. It is hard to imagine the development of animated Japanese cinematography without the crew of the Straw Hat. This is an extraordinary character that the creators of the new manga series follow. – Kamil Sawicki

SeaHawk – She-Ra and the princesses of power

As befits an exceptionally colorful series, She-Ry ‘s characters are also interesting and colorful types. I’m not just saying that Captain SeaHawk has purple hair, a cheeky mustache, and sings or yells enthusiastically whenever the opportunity presents itself. He is a fearless (as he says about himself) sailor who has experienced many (as he claims) adventures, is not afraid to face the danger and does not hide his feelings for the princess Mermista (much to her annoyance).

He is outgoing and charming, so he quickly befriends Adora, Bow or Scorpia, and even Mermista reluctantly admits that she has feelings for him. He is not the typical stubborn (and slightly dirty) pirate we know from other fantastic stories, but along with his mild narcissism and ostentation comes a true talent for fencing, courage and loyalty to the Rebel cause. – Karolina Małas

Hondo Ohnaka – Star Wars

Pirates can be different, and they can be found not only in the rough waters of the ocean, but also in outer space – also long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away! We know him from the animated version of the adventures of the Jedi Knights, specifically from the Clone Wars series and its continuation – Rebels – where he appears and disappears as an episodic character. Easter egg lovers probably also found his portrait in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 .

As befits a pirate, Hondo Ohnaka has its own fleet full of types from under the dark star, along with which he steals, loots, robs, and sometimes even imprisons someone for ransom. Nonchalance and cleverness go hand in hand with a friendly exterior, sense of humor and the ability to improvise efficiently under pressure. Anyway, all of this is absolutely essential to him, considering how often Hondo changes alliances, doing business with Jedi, Sith, Huttas, smugglers… and so on.

Although he is an equal peasant who will always greet us with a smile, and then propose a queue of something stronger and a lucrative business opportunity, sometimes it’s better to give it up – Captain Ohnaka’s private sympathies will immediately go away as soon as he can get rich at our expense. – Krzysztof Dzieniszewki

Captain Hook – Peter Pan

Once upon a time there was Captain Jacob Hak (James Hook) who was terrible, despotic and hated children. Do you remember Peter Pan? This hero was not afraid of anything (well, maybe except a crocodile!) And Haka was not afraid of it either, even though the captain had – yes, I will surprise you! – an iron hook in the place of the right hand. Contrary to appearances, it did not serve Jacob for evil purposes – he most often scratched his back with it. The antagonist’s endless hunts in Neverland, the land of Eternal Childhood, Dreams and Imagination, are an interesting example of obsessive-compulsive disorder. We heard Marek Bargiełowski in the Polish language version of Peter Pan , in the original version – Dustin Hoffman – Ines Załęska-Olszewska

Captain Knykieć – Unusual cases of Flapjack

Flapjack’s Remarkable Cases is an animated series recorded between 2008 and 2010. The cartoon offered a large dose of black humor, which was also aimed at older audiences. Polish viewers could watch it on the Cartoon Network channel. Its main character is Flapjack, a boy raised by a whale. On his way he meets a pirate, Captain Knykć. He talks about his extraordinary adventures, instilling in the young man the desire to go on long journeys. Of course Knykieć made most of his adventures, but he never admits it. In addition, he is selfish, insidious and addicted to sweetness. His body is almost entirely prosthetic. He would probably have abandoned Flapjack long ago if he were not afraid of his whale mother, who watches over her pupil and gets both companions out of their many troubles. Although the whole series is very abstract and absurd, it’s impossible not to like its characters. And Captain Knykć could not be missing from our list. –Piotr Markiewicz

Crazy Roger – The Journeys of Captain Klipper

The pirate can also be found in our Polish backyard! In the years 1986-1990, the animated series Kapitan Klipper’s Travels was created . Although it was only 13 episodes, people brought up in the 90s will surely remember it. It was repeated and displayed many times during Wieczorynka. One of the main characters of the cartoon was a certain Crazy Roger, a pirate constantly attacking the title character’s ship. His attacks, however, never succeed. It is worth adding that he has a beloved and faithful parrot named Kiwit. Roger himself, while dangerous and dangerous (or at least he believes he is), is extremely funny and often makes jokes. He also does not care about constant defeats and attacks poor Klipper over and over again. Well, optimism is key, even among pirates! – Piotr Markiewicz

Crazy Jack – Crazy Jack, a pirate

If you had access to and watched Fox Kids in the 90s, you must know Jack the crazy pirate. This gentleman with a tastefully trimmed goatee and dressed in a red uniform was looking for treasure all over the world. He swam on his boat called “Morski Kurak”, and his first mate was the rat Snuk. It should be added that our corsair was extremely unlucky and practically all of his plans backfired. After all, his adventures were extremely fun and certainly many people cheered him on in his struggles with fate, the sea, other pirates, monsters and Picuś Glancuś. – Piotr Markiewicz

Pirate Captain –  Pirates!

The main character of the animation by Aardman Animations, along with his somewhat crazy, clumsy and too good-natured crew (it is also worth mentioning the Surprisingly Androgenic Pirate and the Pirate Who Likes Cats and Sunsets), experiences absurd adventures, trying to win the title of the Pirate of the Year, but he does it with the grace of mixing Jack Sparrow with the heroes of Monty Python. Piracki is not left with unusual luck, which makes him a laughingstock among his “brothers”, but he can always count on a faithful crew and a Dodo bird. Ultimately, when fate finally smiles at him, he decides to sacrifice fame and wealth for his friends. This is definitely one of the funniest animations I have seen in the cinema, in which this kitsch is mixed with the characteristic British sense of humor, satire and grotesque – Mateusz Michałek
