For years we have been used to the mental shortcut of Marvel comics – Marvel Studios. However, these are not the only films based on Marvel comics that have recently been released in cinemas. Some of the rights to the characters from the world also have Sony Pictures. The label some time ago started with its own universe, revolving around characters related to Spider-Man. Sony is planning another movie with a woman in the lead role. Olivia Wilde became its director. It is not entirely clear whether both film companies are competitors or partners. The fact is one Sony Pictures wants to become a major player in superhero cinema.
Olivia Wilde has been directing for several years, and last year she released her first theatrical debut, Booksmart . The film became famous for its average rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which remained at the highest level for many weeks. Wilde did not reveal what the project is about, but many people are already speculating that she probably meant Spider-Woman or Spider-Gwen, as it was confirmed that the picture will show the female protagonist.
In the Marvel comics, the nickname Spider-Woman was borne by many heroines. The first and most famous character with spider powers is Jessica Drew, who still bears this name. It must not be forgotten, however, that Spider-Woman was also Julia Carpenter (formerly Arachne, now Madame Web), Mattie Franklin, Mayday Parker, as well as Gwen Stacy (now Ghost Spider), plus many heroes from alternate dimensions. The director herself stubbornly avoids journalists’ questions about the plot of the new film.
