I previously associated Joe Hill, known to some as the son of Stephen King (his actual name is Joseph Hillstorm King), mainly through the novel Rogi (I do not mention it as particularly fantastic) and the Locke & Key comics (I like them very much, as well as the series). At the first moment, seeing the cover of Gaz to the metal in the autumn announcements from the So Albatross did not feel any particular chemistry and excitement. Within a few days, however, it turned out that her orders and positive opinions had come to me from different sides, so I decided that I would give the guy one more chance. After all, I’ve always loved horror movies.
I did not expect that some of these thirteen stories would destroy me to such an extent that I would have to dose them several pages at a time. The others, in turn, I will be able to read only during the day and only when I am not alone at home.
Blend for 500 pages
It is difficult to get a good summary of what is in this volume. On the one hand, they are mostly just scary stories, on the other hand, each of them is very unique, so they do not have an equal level. The two opening texts ( Gas to the Dechy , Dark Carousel ) are definitely shots to start. Great plot, with a very heavy atmosphere and bloody scenes, literally terrifying. The first story in particular hit me hard, both with the descriptions of the slaughter of motorcyclists being murdered by the truck and with the killer’s motivation explained at the end. Unfortunately, I cannot write only superlatives about the next texts. Stories about: wolves ( Wolverton Station ) and soldiers ( Thumbs) were simply boring, while whether it was screened by Netflix In tall grass or Chrysanthemums , they were definitely too strong and emotionally tiring for me. Of course, this anthology also includes texts that I was delighted with. Fauns ( based on the theme of going to a different land) or Latterals ( about the fact that sometimes everyone needs to read a good book) are some of the lighter and less dark stories and they are what I like. Also tweets from the circus of the deadturned out to be interesting, both through the message and the selected form of the plot in the form of tweets sent. But what if there were great stories, since the overall impression was mostly influenced by the overly strong and poorer-quality texts.
Good morning, my name is King’s Son
In the book, an introduction by Hill was placed before the actual content. These ten pages were definitely more interesting to me than some of the stories later. The author describes the path he has traveled and how he had to deal with the fact that his father was a famous writer (he still says that the man has a lot of respect for his guardian). Also at the end of the publication, Hill adds a few explanations, but this time they relate to the motivations that caused the texts in the book to be written at all.
Well, cool, but …
The author plays with both his ideas and the forms of their expression. His heroes have a hard time in life, and the corpse is thick with many stories. The death of loved ones, responsibility, the role of the father or mental disorders are just a few of the topics that were used in the texts. I would like to be able to write that a fantastic literary workshop and a fictional mix created a set from which it was difficult for me to break away. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Despite the aesthetic edition and interesting non-fictional inserts from the author, Gaz do dechy is in my opinion an average book (I do not regret the time spent with it yet, but if I had the opportunity to go back, I would think hard if I would rather clean the windows instead of reading) and definitely for one time .
