A little too much Warner
In fact, it takes a full half hour before we actually see Looney Tunes in the Looney Tunes movie. In the opening act, we stay with Don Cheadle – standing out on the green screen stage in a variety of shiny suits as the new Al-G Rhythm evil – to guide us through the dense fog of exposure of the Warner Bros. movie world. Basketball hero LeBron James – a charismatic character, but not an actor, as he depreciates himself in the film – is simply an icon to live up to the legend of Michael Jordan.
Despite this long configuration, the villain’s motivations are thinner than the coyote flattened with boulder. Al-G appears to be an all-powerful algorithm, but still insists on playing basketball to decide everyone’s fate for reasons that have never been explained. This is probably the film’s biggest problem. For reasons just as incomprehensible, the film features all the characters that have ever starred in a Warner Bros. movie. Crazy melodies clash with heroes such as Mad Max and Austin Powers not suitable for children. Steven Spielberg made almost the same raid into the label’s treasury just three years ago with Ready Player One. At least for this movie, there were sound reasons to include almost all of the titles. Here it feels like a nearly two-hour ad for HBO MAX, Warner’s new streaming platform. What, the hell would Kubrick think of the bastards in The Clockwork Orange hanging out with Daffy Duck? On the other hand, it has its charm, and Looney Tunes keep surprising us with their gags.
A couple of slips
However, not everything succeeded in this movie. One of the drawbacks, but also an advantage, is the attempt to present Warner Bros. and their films as one big universe. The viewer really came just a little closer to the idea, and we could certainly see more of Bugs Bunny’s crazy companions and how they become elements of the WB movies. Another thing that hurt me a lot was the lack of Pepe Le Swąd. This lovable skunk has become a symbol of sexual harassment, however, he has always been an ACME resident and was an exaggerated portrait of the typical French, just like Speedy Gonzalez – the typical Mexican. Finally, the last objection – fluffy, digitized Animas. It looks quite extraordinary, and it was better to leave these classic characters in their animated, line form.
Warnerversum digital pass
The release of this movie on Blu-ray digital deserves a few words of attention. It may not be the best release, but it is also not the worst. In addition to Polish dubbing, we have other languages available here, including English, Spanish and even Korean. In addition, we have unused scenes as usual and a few interesting videos in which the heroes from the ACME land bring us closer to the world and the rules of the game in which they move. However, this is where the power of add-ons ends. It is a pity, something more was missing, although the foreign edition contains similar additional materials.
Overall, a Space Jam: A New Legacy is a really interesting family movie. Despite many mistakes, I think that it is worth giving it a chance, especially showing it to the younger generations who most likely do not know the first part. Maybe after seeing the latest work, they will reach for the classic classic from 1996 …
Space Jam Blu-ray release. A New Legacy is a really successful item and I encourage you to acquire it, to admire the achievements of Le Bron and Animek in your free time.
