Guillermo del Toro informed Collider about the approximate release date of his musical. Pinocchio will debut in the last quarter of 2022. Interestingly, it will not be the only production about Pinocchio this year. The second will be acting with Robert Zemeckis as director and Tom Hanks as Gepetto.
The vision of Guillermo del Toro and co-director Mark Gustafson will be animated and much darker. Based on a classic short story by Carl Collodi, the musical will tell the story of a wooden boy who was brought to life by Gepett’s wish. Guillermo del Toro placed the fairy tale in Italy during the reign of Mussolini. Against the backdrop of nascent fascism, the director will tell a story about the rebellion and love of Pinocchio who will try to meet his father’s expectations.
The wooden boy will be played by Gregory Mann, David Bradley by Gepetta, and the cricket will be played by Ewan McGregor. Additionally, the cast also includes Tilda Swinton, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro and Finn Wolfhard.
The movie will hit theaters as well as the Netflix streaming service. Filming for production has been going on since last year and, as we already know, it’s getting closer to the premiere of the musical.
