Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes and Red Skull are getting together again. Ed Brubaker took care of this, as did the Egmont publishing house. So let's check what the Captain America: The Winter Soldier comic looks like .
The story of Steve and Bucky
For a better understanding of the Captain America: The Winter Soldier comicit is worth reading the history of the notebook. The title first appeared in the US in January 2005 and was continued for the next four years. Ed Brubaker was responsible for his script, and Steve Epting was mainly responsible for the drawings. Michael Lark, John Paul Leon or Mike Perkins. And although we get completely new adventures of Captain America, its creator drew handfuls from history. Here we find references to titles published back in 1968! It was created primarily to make it easier to put Rogers and Burnes into the MCU in the future, but also to give them new life. After adventures that took place mostly during World War II, Rogers was sidelined a bit to do much smaller things, and Bucky completely disappeared from the comic book scene. So they had to be moved to the present time. This procedure was a complete success.
We’re starting an investigation
Action Captain America: The Winter Soldiertakes place at the beginning of the 21st century. We already know that Steve Rogers was frozen during one of his last actions in World War II. He spent several years in hibernation, only to come back to life later. He currently works with SHIELD and is a member of the Avengers. The ghosts of the past, however, do not let him rest. The hero often thinks back to the war period and his friend Bucky. Seeing this, Nick Fury decides to send him on forced leave. The more that he suspects that Barnes is not killed at all, but works for foreign intelligence. Meanwhile, Red Skull begins working with General Alexander Lukin and tries to figure out the operation and power of the Cosmic Cube. However, when he dies under mysterious circumstances, Steve begins an investigation on his own.
Superhero or detective?
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a title that is sometimes closer to a detective story than a superhero comic. There is nothing wrong with that, however. Ed Brubaker knows what he is doing. I admired his talent, for example, in Daredevil: Fearless bars 4-6which also showed that the characters of the heroes do not have to use only superpowers. Sometimes simple deduction and fact association are enough. Of course, strong fists and superhuman endurance are also useful, but they definitely take a back seat. So the writers deserve a lot of applause. Despite the fact that the reader quickly guesses who is behind the murder, he still gets caught up in the plot and follows the actions of Captain America, cheering him on all the time. By the way, the recipient has the opportunity to see the history of the famous hero, as well as learn about the history of Bucky before he became the Winter Soldier. There are two additional stories in the notebook, namely Out of Time and Jack Monroe’s Lonely Death . The scriptwriter, in turn, skillfully wove them into the whole story.
The cartoonists also deserve praise. The above-mentioned Steve Epting is responsible for most of the paintings. It perfectly captures the gloomy city that connects with Rogers’ experiences. Thanks to the game of shadows, at times it seems to us that we are reading a comic in a noir style. There are also small details, such as the decor of the Captain’s apartment, which will make us stop for longer with each frame. Michael Lark, in turn, presents us with flashbacks from the lives of the heroes. Black-and-white pictures, full of war struggles, bring to mind films shot at the front. So there is something to admire.
Egmont also deserves a big plus. Once again we get a hardcover comic with a stiff spine. Again, chalk paper was also used. The correction did not disappoint either, so everything looks just as good from the release point of view.
Waiting for the sequel
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a title worth recommending to everyone. Whether you like Steve Rogers in comics or movies, this title will not disappoint you. It is also a real treat for Marvel fans. We can learn here the history of several iconic characters for the publisher. By the way, you will also meet Namor, Crossbones and Human Torch. If, on the other hand, you feel like a detective story, you should also read this notebook. You will not be disappointed. Thanks to the excellent script and graphic design, you will be happy to come back to this position.
