James Gunn's look at space heroes got a post-endgame re-edition. Thanks to it, you can create your own collection or supplement the collected titles. But can those who know these films through and through, can count on something new?
When five years ago the fandom was getting ready for a movie about a talking shed and his friend tree, I could finally say that I did nothing about comic book productions. I like bizarre climates and heroes constructed mainly of flaws, nuances and defense mechanisms – especially in combination with Steve “God-bless-America” Rogers or the cloaked and golden horn pathos pathos of the first two Thor films. However, I have never thought of having them on my shelf before. The era of streaming had softened me and gotten used to myself – both Gunn’s films had been circulating on platforms for several years and I could reach for them in case I wanted to watch Lee Pace make a scary face again and listen to retro David Bowie.
I think some of you can even guess what can be written about the individual titles from this 18-part wholesale collection. So let’s not waste time, just like those who decided that it is enough to make an additional dust jacket for a box with a CD and stop there, and people will go buy anyway.
It’s bad, Mr. Quill
The DVDs available on the market for almost a quarter of a century do not contain many additions – especially if they are released in such a large series. Therefore, having learned from experience, I did not prepare for fireworks and the festival of behind-the-scenes curiosities, although I like such materials very much. But we are dealing here with a new model of modesty! Vol. 1 features a trailer for the Age of Ultron and one dialogue scene with a few extra lines by Bradley Cooper (forget about Rocket’s finished CGI though).
Vol. 2 in the subject of extras is even more disappointing – here we will only find the trailer of Thor: Ragnarok , which fires before the movie, whether we like it or not. In addition, in the original version, after which Taika Waititi was created, he changed some quite important details. You know, the version in which the terrible Hela destroys her younger brother Mjolnir not on Scandinavian soil, but in a dingy New York street. I do not believe that from the set of films featuring guest appearances by Sylvester Stallone, Michelle Yeoh, John C. Reily, Glenn Close, Tommy Flanagan or damn Kurt Russell, it was impossible to extract any cut scene or blooper worth adding to the anno domini 2019 re-release .
At the same time, the editions of both titles have four language versions (Polish dubbing, English, Czech and Hungarian) and subtitles in seven languages. The publisher for the Polish market does not forget about deaf people … but has only English subtitles for them.
There is room for everything in space
In the few years since the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy, I have not lost my sympathy for this bunch of horrible types, but we like them for something. It’s still great entertainment and a departure from the motives that have been fed for years by teenage fans of space brawls. Well-played films, with a bottom line and non-obvious conflicts, beautifully made and with an insane soundtrack. DC would like to sound like that, and so do other Marvel movies, the pieces are carefully selected. Seriously, listen to the lyrics of some of these songs in the context of the situation on the screen, such as The Chain by Fleetwood Mac in Vol. 2 .
Ultimately, I can say that such a DVD release is not worth standing in the queue at the Empik cash register. If you really love Guardians of the Galaxy , you probably already have a blu-ray edition packed with juicy extras (behind-the-scenes footage, Gunn conversations). And if – despite my cool review – you still feel the irresistible need to own these records, as well as the other sixteen Marvel titles, then… I hope they will at least look great on the shelf next to the rest of the collection.
