The game takes advantage of the renewed popularity of fighting games to give fans a chance to step into the shoes of their favorite heroes and take down the Cobra Commander and his squad. GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra will be released early next year for PC and Nintendo Switch.
To explain why the team is launching a new GI Joe game, Hasbro’s VP of Digital Strategy and Licensing, Eugene Evans, said:
GI is one of the most iconic brands of the 1980s, and it was the golden age of arcade games . To celebrate the growing popularity of retro-themed gaming, we’re excited to partner with Maple Powered Games and Freedom Games to bring GI Joe fans the first-ever Hasbro Retro Arcade experience in this thrilling interpretation of the classic 2D fighting game.
When you look at it this way, it’s clear that Hasbro wants to capitalize on the fighting game trend, using a property that fits perfectly with modern games like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge .
Which characters from the series will appear in Wrath of Cobra ?
Wrath of Cobra should provide a list full of fan favorite characters quite easily. While Freedom Games hasn’t announced the full roster, it has given us a sample of the champions to expect at launch, and promises to bring more of them “fight-ready” through post-launch support. Here’s an overview of the current list of playable heroes:
- Duke
- Scarlett
- Roadblock
- Snake Eyes
- Right
- Serpentor
- Baroness
- Cobra Commander

At the time of writing, GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra has been announced exclusively for Nintendo Switch and PC. It’s very possible that the game will never come to PlayStation or Xbox consoles, but it’s worth noting that Maple Powered Games’ last released game, Monster Harvest , eventually made its way to PS4 and Xbox One. These versions arrived about six months after the game’s release on Switch and PC, so we can suspect something similar will happen here. This is pure speculation, albeit based on past trends, so it seems relatively likely that GI Joe: Wrath of Cobra will come to more consoles somewhere in the future.
