1818. Mary Shelley, 21, writes one of the first fantasy novels in history.
I spent the summer of 1816 near Geneva. It was extremely cold and rainy and in the evenings we gathered by the fireplace, enjoying German stories about ghosts. These fairy tales made us want to imitate them. Two friends […] and I decided, each one to come up with a story based on supernatural phenomena.
The story Mary wrote tells of the scientist Victor Frankenstein who wants to become a Creator. In her research, she focuses on the possibility of bringing the dead back to life. It creates an intelligent monster, but it can’t end well (so of course it ends tragically).
1910, 1931, 1955, 1994, 2011, 2015. These are just some of the productions telling about this story or referring to it. It has just been announced that Stone Village Television and BlackBox Multimedia are working together on an adaptation of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. This time it’s going to be a high-end show, whatever that means. Production will focus on:
the behavior and obsessions of a scientist studying the fine thread between life and death – all in the context of the year in which scientific breakthroughs were the most important.
The project will be shot in Europe. Bradley McManus will write the script. Nothing is known about what year it will be. May 2020? It would even fit, it is groundbreaking in many respects. With countless films about Frankenstein being made, this could be an interesting way to stand out. What do you think?
