“Doctor Dream” is a continuation of “The Shining”, one of the most famous novels by Stephen King, daringly screened four decades ago by Stanley Kubrick. The painting was based on King’s book of the same title, published in 2013 and awarded the same year with the Stoker’s Gate for the best novel. The book was brought to the big screen by Mike Flanagan, a director who a few years earlier had already filmed another King’s novel, “Gerald’s Game”.

Starring in “Doctor Dream” starred Golden Globe winner Ewan McGregor (“Trainspotting”), Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Ferguson (“The Girl on the Train”), Kyliegh Curran, Cliff Curtis (“The Fast and the Furious: Hobbs and Shaw” ), Zahn McClaron (“Westworld” series), Emily Alyn Lind (“Revenge” series), Selena Anduze (“Swamp Thing” series), Robert Longstreet (“Aquaman”), Carel Struycken (“The Addams Family”) and Catherine Parker (the series “Haunted House on the Hill”).

Rarely has the story of a dysfunctional family written in such a shocking and lasting way in the contemporary collective consciousness as the story of the Torrance father, mother and son who are the heroes of Stephen King’s third novel, The Shining. The book, published in 1977, has sold over a million copies. The author’s personal skirmishes, as well as his stay in room 217 at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado, inspired the author to write the story of Jack, Wendy, and Danny Torrance. This is one of King’s most personal works. It is terrifying not because of the monsters that live next to us, but because of the real demons that hide in each of us.

Thirty-six years later, King released a sequel to that novel, “Doctor Sleep,” which recounts what happened to Dan Torrance. Although both books are excellent studies of horror and suspense, “The Shining” plunges the reader into the dark depths of addiction, while “Dream Doctor” guides him towards the light through recovery, sacrifice and redemption.

Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the 1980 adaptation of “The Shining” is widely regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time. At the same time, it is one of the most remarkable examples of a filmmaker’s departure from the original book. In Kubrick’s film, various elements of the story, such as the fate of the Panorama Hotel and certain aspects of Jack Torrance’s character, were used in any way. The facts, however, are that both versions of Jack ultimately losing himself in the grip of his addiction and falling into madness have cemented both King and Kubrick’s positions as geniuses in their respective fields.

Director Mike Flanagan read Stephen King’s first novel in the fifth grade of primary school. And he immediately became a lifelong fan of the writer. The novel “Doctor Dream” returns to many of the themes touched on in “The Shining” that were not covered in the film, such as addiction and the fight against it, to the extent portrayed by King. – I fell in love with this book from the very first pages. I liked the three main characters: Dan, Abra and Rose Hat. I was fascinated by pitting the addiction of “The Shining” back to normal in “Doctor Dream,” juxtaposing ice with fire. King took a lot of interesting plots from the first novel and allowed them to evolve into a completely new character , says Mike Flanagan. –On the one hand, I would like to faithfully portray King’s work, but on the other hand, I’m also a huge fan of Kubrick’s film. These two sides of my personality were fighting with each other when I started this project. However, I found that if I can reconcile these two inner desires, I will probably also be able to satisfy the viewers – adds the director.

Interestingly, Stephen King himself was not initially interested in the adaptation of his novel. The film “Kubrick” based on “The Shining” is a masterpiece, but the writer himself, which he has expressed many times, is not a big fan of it because the director treats the source material too freely. It took Flanagan a long time to convince King to change his mind, but he finally succeeded.

Ewan McGregor played the main role in the film “Doctor Sen”. This is one of the few horror films in the actor’s output who, as he himself admits, does not like to be afraid. – “The Shining” was said to be the scariest film in the world. Consequently, I didn’t see it until I was twenty. I only did it once because it scared me too much. I’m not a fan of scary movies. I don’t like being scared. But I liked the novel “Doctor Sen”, which I read after reading the script. Later I read “The Shining”, which I also liked – recalls Ewan McGregor.

Shooting for the film “Doktor Sen” began in September. The crew worked in Georgia, and the shooting took place in Atlanta and St. Simons. Work on the set lasted until December. Mike Flanagan’s film was released in late October and early November last year. It was very well received by viewers and critics.
