Fight in time and space – review of the comic book “DC Comics: Generations”

DC Comics: Generations tells the story of an extraordinary group of superheroes, including Sinestra, Superboy, Batman and Steela. Can a comic book focused on the adventures of such an unusual team turn out to be a gem?

Generations that have already emerged

Quite recently, I had the opportunity to get acquainted with the prologue of the item discussed today ( Detective Comics 1027 ). Then I wrote that in my opinion it is one of the two weakest comics included in this collection. Not only that, I found this introduction not very interesting. So why did I decide to review a position that did not make a good impression on me at the start? I was just curious if my opinion was right. After all, it could also be that I judged Generations too hastily . I wanted to find out if it would be another clichéd, chaotic and boring reading, or maybe an original story!

Heroes from different times and places

DC Comics: Generations, it’s a crazy story, though a bit chaotic. Well, one of the heroes, a certain Kamandi, quickly gathers a team that is to save all possible worlds. The threat is serious, because Dominus manipulates time and removes different timelines. Thus, it erases billions of lives as if… at the flick of a finger. And so, apart from Kamandim, this superhero group included: Superboy, Steel, Sinestro, Batman (1939), Starfire, Booster Gold and Doctor Light. With the team created so quickly, of course, it could not do without a few glitches. Nevertheless, in the end, the heroes got along and faced Dominus and his helpers, and as a result were sent to different timelines! For example, Steel and Superboy found themselves in a world full of prehistoric reptiles, and Batman saw the world of the future, in which the “friends” are made up like Ikea furniture! I must admit that these short visits to these two mentioned places turned out to be extremely interesting. The lineup of superheroes is also very unusual. After all, Sinestro is rather associated as a super villain, and here he still belongs to the Green Lantern Corps and helps other heroes (although it is worth mentioning that he is drawn to abusing violence). Each of the eight heroes brings something important to the plot. It seems that although they were gathered quite by chance, Kamandi chose his companions well. Dominus fares worse – he is just another asexual antagonist. I am also not convinced by his motivation. To some extent, it even reminds me of the Frost King from the one I reviewed that these short visits to these two mentioned places turned out to be extremely interesting. The beauty of passing time

In the case of graphic design, we can talk about a rare project. As many as twenty-four artists are responsible for this almost 200-page comic. What surprised me the most was the incredible compatibility of styles. Reading this book, I somehow did not feel that I deal with the work of so many talented cartoonists. The release is fully satisfactory, although it is a pity that there are no covers or other additions at the end. Also, the short summary on the back of the cover only mentions seven of the eight heroes who take part in this adventure. I don’t understand why it wasn’t mentioned that Superboy is also part of this team.

Is it worth following Kamandi?

After all, my first impression was not completely wrong, because Generations is an average comic. The story is interesting and engaging, although it lacks greater emotions and unexpected twists, and the antagonist could be much more interesting. On the other hand, however, we have an unusual team of superheroes thrown into unusual and intriguing places. Thanks to this, I met some interesting characters, such as Steela and Kamandi, and I also found out that the visions of the future of some scriptwriters are extremely crazy. In the end, I do not regret reading this comic, although I liked the Eternal Winter mentioned earlier .

Nasza ocena: 6.7/10

DC Comics: Generations collects heroes from different times and throws them to a showdown with Dominus. The comic is average, although it is impossible to deny its charm.
