Everyone to the shelter! – review of the game “Silence in the city of zombies”

Zombie is a topic that comes back to us every now and then. We see living dead in movies, series, comics or computer games. This time, however, they come to us with the latest card game from the Muduko publishing house. Do they have anything interesting to offer?

Save who you can!

The silence in the zombie cityis a card game for 2-6 players. We play the role of a shelter builder, and our task is to save as many survivors as possible. To better introduce us to the atmosphere and throw us into the whirl of events, the creators even tried to introduce an appropriate introduction. In it we learn that about a month ago there was an epidemic that turned people into zombies. During this time, the undead have taken over the city and are hunting for the few living people. They, in turn, are looking for safe places where they could hide. We, in turn, must help them in this, and at the same time try to destroy as many dead people as possible. But that’s not all. There are more shelters in the town, but they are not going to cooperate with each other, but to destroy each other! For all this, we must try to maintain absolute silence so as not to lure the bloodthirsty dead.

Disturb or die!

In the game, we will fight not only with zombies, but also with other people at the table. The silence in the zombie city is loaded with negative interaction. Of course, we can only try to build our own shelter all the time and not attack others, but we cannot be sure that our friends will turn out to be equally generous. This way, it is harder to win, and we lose a lot of fun … but one by one.

A player’s turn is divided into three phases. From the beginning, we have two Survivors in the shelter and three cards in hand. In the first phase, we can play them or discard them. Our cards are divided into several types – they are used to summon Survivors, build a wire fence in the shelter, kill zombies or disturb your teammates. It is the fourth type that is most interesting here. It gives us the ability to steal survivors, destroy barriers and, above all, throw undead to our opponents. By the way, you should plan your tactics well. Some of the cards cause noise that will lure the undead to us. So it is worth considering whether it is really worth attacking the rival right now, because we can harm ourselves by the way. It should also be added that in Silence in the city of zombiesthere is no shortage of randomness. Even the best-thought-out plan can backfire when the so-called fast zombie, attacking faster than we expect. By the way, we also do not know what our rivals have in hand and whether they will pay us back in a moment for the beautiful ones. But on the other hand, no risk, no fun!

Once we have laid or discarded cards from our hand (we always have to make one of these two moves), we proceed to the attack phase. At this point, the zombies in front of us are attacking our Survivors. If we do not stop them with wire entanglements, we will lose the people we saved earlier. When our shelter becomes empty – we are out of the game. It is also worth mentioning that when a deceased kills someone, he does not disappear from the table, but waits for his next move to devour the helpless victim again.

If we managed to survive the zombie attack, we draw three cards in our hand and end the turn, and the player on our left starts his. And so we act until there is only one “alive” player left in the game or the Survivor cards run out. Then we move on to the “Final Attack” in which we no longer have the option of drawing cards and we have to defend ourselves with what we have. This could result in a carnage leaving only one person left on the battlefield. It is also possible to finish all undead. Then the one with the most Survivors in their shelter wins.

Shot in the air

If you find that the game is too simple for you and there is usually no carnage, and the winner is determined by the number of Survivors in the shelter, the developers have prepared an expert mode for this occasion. It doesn’t differ much from the base. We start the game with one survivor instead of two. In addition, if the zombies are not in your shelter, and you have a weapon that causes noise, you can use it for the so-called shot in the air. This way, it will be harder to get much more dead from the deck and it will be harder to survive Phase 2 and it will be harder to get new Survivors. This will diversify the gameplay, and it is possible that it will also make it much faster.

The city you will come back to

The silence in the zombie cityis a card game with very simple rules. A short and clear instruction makes it enough to read it carefully once, run a trial game and you can easily sit down at the table. Once you know the rules, you will explain them very quickly to your friends as well. The game will take you no more than 20 minutes. This is a perfect cutscene for more complicated titles and great fun to spice up your evening in company. The creators should be praised for the very nice performance of the cards, although it is a pity that both the figures of the Survivors and the zombies are repetitive. The plus is also for the attempt to introduce the right climate and introduce us to the history of the city overrun by the undead. In turn, the high randomness means that we will be able to return to the title and we will not get bored, and each game will turn out to be different. Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages. If the players choose not to attack each other, the game will not force them to do so. They will just build barriers, collect Survivors, and finally count who has the most. If you don’t play on expert level, you will easily get rid of all the dead and you will not see a carnage in their execution. It would be much more interesting if the developers introduced the rule of the appearance of zombies on the table every turn, regardless of the movement of the players. This would provoke defense at the expense of others. But you can always agree among yourself that we will not be passively arming ourselves, but in fact we will give our corpse an opportunity to feed. So if you like negative interactions and planning strategies to survive and destroy others, then this is collect Survivors and finally count who has more.
